Mission: The mission of Ice Theatre is to develop ice skating as a performing art--to create a dance company on ice. Ice Theatre is a medium in which professional skaters from varied backgrounds collaborate with choregraphers, musicians, writers and visual artists to create and perform innovative new works. It is also an environment, which nurtures young performers and choreographers.
Results: This past October Ice Theatre's Fall Benefit Gala and Performance launched our 25th Anniversary Season. The festivities were bigger than ever before, starting with a sold-out performance featuring Dorothy Hamill and special appearances by Sarah Hughes and Johnny Weir, and ending with the biggest ever attendance for the dinner party. Peter Carruthers hosted a fabulous evening honoring Olympic Champion, Dorothy Hamill. ITNY's first Board Chair and Trustee, the late R. Palmer Baker, Jr. was the Ice Angel Award recipient and MAC Cosmetics received the Arts & Business Partnership Award for making our skating world more beautiful. The event raised close to $270,000 to support Ice Theatre's Education and Outreach Programming and its 25th anniversary season artistic programming.
Target demographics: Our dance-on-ice programs are for professionals and young apprentices, our educational programming targets children K through 8, and our public concerts are intended for the general public.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Our performances employ about 60 artists and 50 artists and apprentices participate in the NYC residency. About 23,000 people watched our performances featuring over 50 artists and apprentices in the 2009/2010 season and our educational programming served 1800 public school children in Harlem and Queens.
