This program was sincere and organized, but when I went on a scholarship exchange in the 1980s, they were recruiting high school seniors during the last half of the senior year and it was quite abrupt. Other agencies, such as the American Friends Committee exchanges are usually during the junior year, which is much better for the continuity of education and friendships during high school. It's not good to miss your high school graduation, especially abruptly. Also, I was sent to a country that did not speak the type of Spanish I had been studying, but a very different dialect (Costa Rica) with entirely different verb tenses. In other ways, ICEP was great. They sent back a student who became anorexic and they changed host families for a student whose host father became inappropriate.
