Worldreader is a mission-oriented and transparent organization that values and supports the creation of reading routines as a family in the home, where learning begins. The BookSmart app is an amazing resource, with content that children and parents/caregivers love, along with simple reading activities that support reading comprehension, play based learning and social and emotional development and also promote bonding with one's child.

My daughter (3.5) and I read often on Booksmart and she asks for repeated reads of many of her favourite Worldreader books, particularly some of the Originals. She finds it easy to navigate on my phone (with my help) and loves the text-to-speech accessibility option, though I look forward to the day when Worldreader might produce their own narrator-read audiobooks if that's on the horizon, as the accessibility reader can sometimes be a little robotic. My daughter's favourite book is 'Dive! Dive! Dive! Book 2: Into the Deep' and she also enjoys 'Why is Nita Upside-Down'. Great to have a free library at our fingertips, particularly when travelling on public transport!

Our book club selected Worldreader as our literary charity for this year. We base our monthly donation on how many books we read collectively per month. We selected Worldreader because we believe that their vision to get books into hands of readers, especially children, is vitally important. We appreciate their work toward diverse authors, stories and languages. We think the use of using technology such mobile phones and tablets to disseminate ebooks is a smart one.

Worldreader is an organization that consistently delivers and innovates. Over the 8 years I have been involved with, and supporting World Reader, I have been constantly impressed with the technology, ease of use and content that the organization curates. What differentiates their value, is that they are creating a platform that can be economically accessible to a broad audience which expands the impact they have. I highly recommend supporting this organization based on quality of resources, innovation, and measurable success. They are truly making a difference in developing readers in large swaths of often underserved communities across our global community. Not only do the individuals who can read as a result of World Reader programs gain an increased sense of self worth, but because they are often reading as families, World Reader is strengthening core values and family time.

My name is Nina Chung and I'm the founder of Elimu.ca. We have been providing textbooks and other reading materials to children in Kenya through our Worldreader Kindles since 2016 - when we opened a digital education resource centre in Malindi. It has been great a way to enhance literacy in the community and to help students with the resources they need to improve their performance at school. The kids love reading using Kindles and we love the portability. One device holds 200+ books, so we can even take our literacy programs out to the community at large, including schools, a girls rescue home, the junior remand centre and a local prison. We are grateful to Worldreader for the work their do to make everyone everywhere a reader!

Our first contact as publisher with World Reader was in 2011/2012, when their officer came to Tanzania to introduce the organization and find out if we were willing to cooperate with them in their noble task of providing books to children who need them all over the world. Since then, and based on the impact WR has registered in accessing books to children and adults in schools and communities, we, at E & D always confirm to ourselves that working with World Reader was among the best decisions we have made. World Reader has many strengths that continue to keep their partners with them: Innovative thinking, quick to adapt technology to fit emerging needs, good selection of stories that speak to children wherever they are, quick response to special needs, particularly demonstrated in this period of COVID pandemic, timely reporting and updating, and most importantly, high respect for readers and partners as shown through communication. This is not to say they have done it all, but rather, their success so far reflects possibilities that await a future full of potential. We at E & D Vision Publishing Limited continue to believe in the work of World Reader.

I've been contributing to Worldreader for several years now. I was initially impressed by their ability to use the technology prevalent in the communities they serve. I have become much more impressed by their understanding of the importance that the literature the children read needs to be representative of their lives. So, the work that WR is doing with writers and publishers is vital and exceptional. Moreover, they share some of these stories with donors - helping to get the word out about writers and publishers from Africa.

As a teacher, principal, and former municipal library board member, I know the importance of reading. But, being from the African diaspora, I know even more the value of being represented in the literature available. Worldreader could also be called Worldpublisher!

I have been a fan of electronic books for more than 15 years after suffering a fire which destroyed my home. I lost everything including my vast book collection. So when I heard that World Reader was dedicated to getting electronic books into the hands of children in schools where transportation of physical books was difficult, for so many reasons, I knew this was a non profit I wanted to support. The stories that are shared of the successes in remote parts of the world, the children who have been inspired to read and write their own stories, how World Reader has overcome one of the greatest difficulties faced in the education of children, arming them with material from their own culture, giving them information about others, inspiring them to read more. We know that children are future adults, and education is the tool that helps them reach their true potential, World Reader is one of the most inspiring non profits out there, it uses technology that doesn't require a lot of electricity, the Kindle eReader, and each eReader can hold thousands of books. The insight of its founders in using this tool is extraordinary.

I make regular donations to Worldreader and receive updates on their work. Whenever I feel a feel a bit low and the world seems a gloomy place I visit their website and see what they've been up to and I feel more positive. The concept is so clever and empowering: giving children and families direct access to a virtual library in their own hands, a library stocked with books that are relevant to their community and culture. I love that e-reader technology makes it more affordable to produce books that are relevant to communities that wouldn't have the buying power that would drive hard copy publishing and distribution. I find it quite moving to think of children developing a love of reading and learning that is valuable in its own right, but also sets them up for better life chances. Amazing.

By helping raise a generation of literate people, WorldReader is going squarely at providing a fundamental piece of the solution to global poverty, ignorance, overpopulation, and women's and basic human rights.

To my mind they're pretty much the platonic ideal of a well run charity with a clear and actionable mission.

Since my knowledge about Worldreader began on the 13th of December 2012, l have been impressed by their nonprofit humanitarian works of providing ebooks to underprivileged children and young adults via kindle and smartphone especially in Third World countries.
I found out the organisation is very straightforward in its dealings with authors that contribute ebooks to its global literacy programmes. I also enjoyed various pictures and reports about its activities among local folks in Asia and African countries that have benefitted so far from ebooks shared to them.
I will continue to support Worldreader with any new relevant eBook l write in line with its areas of interest.

My experience with Worldreader has been nothing short of amazing and helpful. Just a year ago, I discovered this platform which helps to improve the reading habit of youngsters across Africa especially in Ghana, Kenya, and other countries. The books are nothing but amazing and full of life lessons. I have never spotted a crappy book on Worldreader.
However, I would love it if Worldreader extended their accessibility to laptops and computers. This is because, a lot of school students have laptops, so they may need to read there. However, the website isn't available to laptops. Please, Worldreader. I've sent you this request before, but you didn't get back to me.
Please look into my query and work on it. I'm sure it'd boost your traffic and spread your message for reading and extend your help to a lot of people across the world.
Counting on your cooperation,
Thank You!

Simon and his colleagues climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and 50 readers were brought to Malindi in 2019. Since then they have been in the library and as outreach.

Learning by reading is one of the most pleasurable and thoughtful experiences that we have as a civilization. Giving this opportunity to tens of thousands of people in order to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them is a wonderful achievement. I am very proud to support Worldreader and everything they are doing to make this world a better, more humane place to live.

I first became interested in Worldreader because I knew the founder (from a distance) through a job I had years ago. The organization not only does top-notch , ambitious work around the world, but they do it with professionalism not found at many nonprofits.

Our foundation has supported a few specific initiatives, a library in Kenya, etc. I traveled with them to Ghana for a digital reading conference three years ago and can attest that the amazing work and the impact it makes on the lives of readers around the world is real.

I have been a donor to Worldreader for eight years. It is a well-run organization with a powerful idea on how to bring reading and reading materials to under-served parts of the world--with digital books on tablets and phones, often written in the local language. The world opens up to those who read and have appropriate material to read. Worldreader is bringing the gift of reading to those often lacking this resource.

Traveling with a Purpose
The unmistakable cheers of uniform clad children signal that we have finally arrived at Kenya’s Enkereri. Putting aside my hesitations, the young students grab my hand and proudly give me a tour of their campus. Scouring the classroom in hopes to find any source of learning material, I spy one solitary book. Suddenly my hands no longer hold the dainty fingers of children, but rather their treasured book that threatens to disintegrate in my grasp. I feel ashamed of all the novels hidden away in my room. That was the moment I felt compelled to make a difference half way across the world.
Books embody a special place in my heart and I needed a conduit to share my heart with the students in Kenya. Worldreader is that conduit. Based in San Francisco, Worldreader secures Kindles from Amazon and digitizes learning material to distribute to needy schools. My job was to secure the funding. I mastered my business pitch, persuading friends, acquaintances, and strangers that providing Kenyan children with textbooks would improve their personal karma and make an impact on a global scale. Undaunted in my enterprise, I raised over $70,000, funding six Kenyan primary schools and one hearing impaired school in Tanzania with eReaders.
What began as a project to help out one particular school, turned into a mission that has transformed my life. As a Student Ambassador for Worldreader, I have put a beacon of light into the hands of those who were previously living in academic darkness. Wanting to illuminate the rest of the world, my goal is to inspire families to vacation with a purpose. In my adventures, Worldreader is that purpose.

This summer I had the privilege of sponsoring 2 e-reader projects at 2 primary schools in western Uganda run by the Nyaka Aids Orphans Project. The difficulty and high cost of sourcing books in rural Africa had been impressed upon me on previous trips and so when by chance I came across an article about Worldreaders work my interest was piqued and the possibility of matching our needs with Worldreader's vision gradually over a course of mails and conversations flourished and became a reality. The meticulous planning and guidance from the outset to implementation was both enjoyable and rewarding but never more so than when our children received their readers and after a short training station were able to open a book and read a story written by an African author. The children we are educating are from seriously impoverished backgrounds but now have the chance to incorporate innovative reading technology into their school lives which we hope will stand them in good stead to play their part in a technology-savvy future ahead. In an ideal world, I would love to see the schools in rural Africa brimming with books but at least Worldreader has made reading accessible to many for a relatively small investment. From the point of view of a donor, it represents astounding value for money, 10,000 books on 50 small devices and at little more than a dollar each, the fact they will be read countless times makes it excellent value for money.

When I attended the parents day at Nganana primary school, exactly three months after the school benefited from the e-readers project, I heard a grade four boy reading aloud a story in Kiswahili from the e-reader. The parents and his fellow students understood the story well and clapped for him after he finished reading. The head teacher of the school then testified that this boy could not read a complete sentence in Kiswahili before the e-readers came to the school. He was in grade four but still could not read. He went on to say the e-reader kits excited him since they got to the school. He would read daily stories and since then his reading has improved. I believed what I saw and was fulfilled to volunteer onto this project, realizing this huge impact in such a short time. As a PhD student, it was very frustrating and painful to see a forthcoming generation of kids who up to grade four could not read a sentence properly due to shortage of books in their schools. I did not take a second thought to volunteer working on this project that the university I study was in partnership with Worldreader on the e-readers project.

This is the reality, indeed there is no need of another African solution to fight illiteracy in rural schools. The kits have books in our local language, Kiswahili for Mathematics, Science and stories all in Kiswahili. We are indeed privileged to have Worldreader in Tanzania in the secluded rural schools of Nganana and Nambala in Arusha region of Tanzania. Thank you David and your dream team. Worldreader is a unique organization, they do not only ship the kits to beneficiaries but they physically reach these rural areas and spend time with the beneficiaries despite the tough conditions in the areas. I recall the launch at Nganana school was during the rain season and the roads were inaccessible by car. David on the lead and the Worldreader team in rain boots walked half a mile to reach the school and had experience with the kids and teachers on the e-readers.
Keep up the good work. Books for All indeed.

Every day at Imtimigom Primary School in Kilgoris, Kenya, students form a line snaking out of the office door to pick up 100+ Kindles. They choose to read through recess, rather than play football. We've seen an amazing transformation in student knowledge and performance (in English and Kiswahili) through our partnership with WorldReader. Kudos to all!

As a volunteer, I went to Adeiso where I helped the kids of primary 4 with reading comprehension. It was sad that they were not bolder to speak their own minds but the WorldReader initiative is a brilliant solution to this very behavior: the kids will learn to read and will be able to read about others who spoke their minds, people who boldly and nobly accepted that they were wrong and corrected their positions with neither shame nor fear; they will see the nobility in speaking and hearing others. Besides, books allow the human spirit to expand beyond its physical limits with minimal use of resources. These for me illustrate what a useful project is WorldReader.

And, it does not matter about black/white, African/non-African solutions, it is a great big connected world and we can all use the help as humans make human solutions to human problems. We are all we have and cooperation is at the very peak of what we must do.

This is not just another American/European CRAZY idea to solve African problem. It is certainly not hype! It is an innovation plat form you can believe in.

Worldreader is just one actor in this network. I have worked for/with NGOs before but Worldreader is one of the few I am willing to support and write a review on. More importantly because of the passion and commitment of the organisation and its staff in trying to make school children in developing world learn how to read and read better.

My first encounter with Worldreader was through a simple e-mail from one of its volunteers'. I am currently a lecturer at of one of the Nelson Mandela African Institutions of Science and Technology. Here we want to make a difference for society and industry. We believe it is possible to make fundamental difference if we support lower level education, particularly primary and secondary schools. What is more important than to make school kids know how to read and read better? So independently we developed using the concept of living labs a programme to support learning in schools through information and communication technology.

Then the question was how do you succeed in a terrain where even the most noble idea like the one-laptop per child project failed. When worldreader mention that they can provide low cost e-reader, I immediately thought we got the seed, mark my use of the word 'seed' here! Our collaboration with Worldreader allowed us to put over 30000 books in the hands of about 1000 school children. A lot has since taken place since the launch of our project in May, 2013. If you have read this far you can even see this link http://arushalivinglab.wordpress.com/.

What I am trying to say here is, don't look at Worldreader as the ultimate solution to your problem, instead look at it as one of the spoke you will need to make a better education wheel for Africa. Supporting education in Africa is not the work of one NGO; it is going to be the effort of a diverse network of actors. Worldreader is trying to bring the network together - African publishers, teachers, childrens, leaders, other NGOs, private sector etc. African books are used, they support innovative local ideas. You are not certified, welcome to visit us in Arusha, Tanzania and let us give you a little hint of becoming a game changer in African education.

On a personal note. When it comes to education I have defied the odd - an outlier or just the product of a blind watchmaker? I studied in the war zone of northern Uganda and I know what difference access to textbooks can make even if it is half charred by rebel fire. One day I will write a book about my education. For now lets help those who are caught up in this situation. Let them learn how to read and read better. Hopefully we can produce better scientist, engineers, leaders, researchers, economist etc in Africa. Don't wait for some absurd phenomenon of "African solution by Africans" to occur by chance. Use what you have now to make a difference. Thanks to David and team at Worldreader kids who could have failed in final exams are now able to write a story book of their own.

Of course we need great leaders in Africa but don't just wait until they drop from heaven. Start making one, making children and reader better is one way.

I volunteered for Worldreader for a period of about 1 year. During this time, I got the chance to mentor my peers to have a smooth education. Though encouraging and facilitating the art of reading is the main mission for Worldreader, the organization also endeavours to connect their wards with important institutions like Ashesi University College (The Harvard of Ghana).
During my volunteering year, I met different people from Ghana and beyond who helped the students build skills in writing, reading, oral communication, and even sports. For me, Worldreader is not just about reading, but about helping young unprivileged students realise their latent potentials.

Worldreader is also culturally conscious: Many of the books on the kindles used by their Ghanaian wards are texts written by Ghanaians. Worldreader has also helped computerize and simplify the work of teachers by converting most of the then hard copy textbooks into pdfs. Unlike other organizations, I believe worldreader learns from the people and bases upon collected facts to engineer a curriculum that best suits the life and culture of the people.

Worldreader is not only about helping read, but about a group of critical minds at work to help young people find their power in many spheres of life. It has been a great experience volunteering for Worldreader, and I envy the kids having free e-readers, lol.

I volunteered to work with worldreader because i believed so much in what they were doing and continue to do. I know the impact reading has had on my life and i believed strongly that the same impact will be had on the lives of these lovely kids if books were made more accessible. Thanks to worldreader and the introduction of the amazon kindle, these kids not only have access to books but tons of them, all at no cost.
HOW AWESOME IS THAT!

I have visited the Worldreader project site a number of times and I think you don't even know the tremendous impact you are making in both the lives of the children and the community has a whole. I myself I am a user of the Worldreader Mobile app which allows me to read books for free on my mobile phone. I really like what you are doing and continue your good works.

We need an African solution to this problem. It is Africans who truely understand the educational problems and have answers to them not an European or Americans solution

I was deeply moved by my visit to Adeiso, Ghana, where Worldreader started its first pilot project 18 months ago. The people in Adeiso do not consider themselves "disadvantaged" -- though the per capita income is only a few thousand dollars per year. Families in Ghana pay a huge percentage of their annual income on their young children's education (as compared to what we pay here in the U.S.) and they value education highly. Books are expensive and difficult to get. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to provide books, in digital form, on Kindle e-readers, to the teachers in Adeiso and to the primary school. Attached are photos of the classroom which my donation is supporting.
