Mission: The greater seattle bureau of fearless ideas (formerly known as 826 seattle) believes that the power of words, well-written and well-spoken, can open doors to important opportunities. Our tutoring, writing, and publishing programs prepare young people, ages 6-18, for a successful future by developing strong writing skills, championing diverse communication styles and motivating young people to share their stories. All programs are free and open to families from any socio-economic background.
Programs: After school tutoring:our after school tutoring program remains one of our cornerstone programs. Our goal for this program is to support students in the completion of their homework and achievement of greater success in school. We also wish to inspire our students to acquire and improve upon writing skills and to enjoy the art of writing as they benefit from the mentoring of caring adults. We offer writing clubs available for those students who have completed their homework. Examples include poetry, songwriting, and pen pal clubs. Lastly, we strive to help our students "own" their own learning and successes by helping them take full responsibility for what they have accomplished. While the bulk of our after school tutoring students come from our immediate neighborhood, the program is especially well-attended by students from our east african immigrant community. We find that children actually come from all over the greater seattle area to attend this essential program. We also offer a high school only tutoring program four nights a week with a focus on helping students with their homework in all subjects as well as college preparation work. This work includes application assistance, sat practice, and personal statement planning and editing.
workshops and publishing:our creative and expository writing workshops spark imagination and teach skills. In our workshops, reluctant writers and aspiring authors can write dystopian fiction, poems in forts, college entrance essays and more. These workshops are run during fall, winter and spring quarters on weekends and weekdays during summer break. With the help of excellent teachers and gifted book-making professionals, we publish select student work created in the bureau of fearless ideas workshops and during our publishing projects. Our anthologies are on sale in our store and online. We also have an online literary journal. All proceeds from the sale of books (and space travel supplies) go to fund our programs.
in-schools:trained volunteers head to classrooms around king county to support teachers in their writing curricula. We help edit student work and guide research, making for more in-depth writing projects. We can enhance the final products by collecting work in chapbooks or assisting with publishing parties.
