Mission: The greater sacramento urban league (gsul) has been empowering communities and changing lives since 1968 by providing training to thousands of youth and adults from urban communities in and around sacramento county. We are an affiliate of the national urban league and one of more than 95 affiliates nationwide. Our mission is to provide under-served youth and adults with education, job training and placement opportunities for them to achieve economic self-reliance.
Programs: Youth empowered for success (yes)out of school youth (osy) - gsul's osy program specializes in working with 18 to 24-year-old low-income young-adults, who may be living in priority zip codes, and lack job and/or academic skills. Osy provides individualized services in leadership development, community service, life skills, and relevant work experience and occupational skills. Osy aims to teach young adults how to be successful in school, on the job, and ultimately in life. Thousand strong/etp - in partnership with the mayor steinberg's office, gsul's aims to boost sacramento's economic prosperity to create a pool of skilled, experienced young talent. The year-long, paid internship program matches young, talented students with businesses and then readies those interns for success on the job. Hsul provide youth with valuable training prior to internship. Sava/gcc - the program offers career exploration, work experiences and job readiness opportunities for students attending sacramento academic and vocational academy, and gateway community charter schools. Gsul facilitates career assessments and career pathways sessions. Students receive work experience, as well as application, resume and interview workshops. Also, gsul conducts 6 sessions of job readiness training, job placement, and college or vocational college support.
adult job & career readinesssacramento works job center - gsul job center serves as one of sacramento works' 13 one stop career centers that provide job seekers and employers with access to all recruitment, engagement, training, and job placement products and services in the sacramento region. Gsul's job center offers career counseling, employment referrals, and scholarships for vocational training. In additions, the center offers support services like bus passes, food, work clothing and tools, rental/child care assistance, etc. Higher heights adult high school diploma - gsul's adult high school offers students the opportunity to earn a regionally accredited high school diploma, which is preferred by employers over a ged and paves the way to college entrance. Students are assessed to determined diploma requirements and work at their own pace while guided by california-credentialed teachers. The program accepts enrollments year-round, is open to adults 22 and over, and is at no cost to students. Career technical education (cte) - gsul's cte courses prepare students for career in the skilled trades, applied arts and sciences, and modern technologies, gsul's course curriculum is designed to improve job skills and marketability in high wage, high demand careers. Currently, gsul offers cte courses in custodial maintenance and computer software and digital media.
quality of lifeblack child legacy campaign (bclc) - bclc is a community-driven movement established to reduce death rates among black children by 10% to 20% by the year 2020 in sacramento county. Gsul's cil has been charged with prevention and intervention efforts. The four focus areas include perinatal conditions, infant safe sleep, child abuse and neglect, and third-party homicide. Housing and counseling - gsul's housing and counseling services focus on introducing youth and adults to banking including money management. The program teaches ways to forestall mortgage default, delinquency and foreclosure. Lastly, gsul promotes homeownership to potential first-time home buyers.
