Causes: Community Recreational Centers, Sports, Sports Associations & Training Facilities, Swimming & Other Water Recreation
Mission: Low/moderate income families have a hard time prioritizing expensive summer camps. The Boating Program is here and area residents have a rare opportunity to learn lifelong boating skills in a program generally beyond the reach of low/moderate income families. Because we require a swim test, participants must learn to swim which protects them from accidental drowning. Further, boating skills create a social confidence for a child which raises self-esteem and offsets the advantages of suburban youth when competing for college entrance. In addition, our new rowing program for high school students, which is five times as expensive as our regular membership, would also be accessible to Lawrence residents who income-qualify. This is a great opportunity for the hard-working students trying to get into competitive colleges.
Programs: Three levels of sailing lessons: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Use of canoes and kayaks ongoing. Open 8 am to 8 pm seven days a week from the Wednesday after Father's Day till Labor Day. Rowing program for competitive high school athletes in early March till November in three seasons.
