Mission: Gatewave''s mission is to give voice to the written word, thus enabling those who cannot see or read to access the information they need to maintain their dignity, independence and connection to the outside world.
Programs: Gatewave is currently the only radio reading service for those living in New York City and the surrounding counties. That leaves approximately 490,000 listeners in homes, hospitals, nursing homes and other residential facilities, with only Gatewave to ameliorate their sense of isolation and gain access to the same news, finance, health, and cultural information as those with sight.
While all of our narrators volunteer their services, one hour of programming still costs approximately $350 to produce. This fee does not cover repeat airings nor access to the closed-circuit specially tuned radio receivers that are loaned, free of charge, to approximately 3,500 Medicaid-recipients.
Gatewave programming airs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but our schedule is presently abridged to 4 hours of original programming a day that repeats in six cycles. We are seeking funds to:
• Double the number of hours of original programming offered to 8 hours a day (56 hours a week), 52 weeks a year.
• Provide audio access to voter guides, local advertisements, and social service/government programs and services.
• Increase public awareness of our service by 50% through advertising and outreach programs to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, and other care facilities in the New York Metropolitan area.
