Mission: The garment worker center (gwc) is a worker rights organization whose mission is to organize low-wage garment workers in los angeles in the fight for social and economic justice.
Programs: Worker education and training: we held at least 25 workshops with approximately 75 workers and completed approximately 60 hours of training in worker rights, occupational health and safety, garment industry background, immigrant rights, research methods, media training and industrial sewing and patterning. Leadership development: we provided approximately 60 hours of leadership training to 15 members. Training included outreach and recruitment, wage rights, occupational health and safety, settlement negotiation, media training, the legislative process, and conducting surveys. Case management: we spent approximately 500 hours assisting workers with wage claims, including wage calculations, filling out forms and demand letters, site visits, negotiations, and hearings. Research: we released and occupational health and safety report entitled " dirty threads, dangerouus factories: health and safety in los angeles fashion industry. "policy advocacy: we spent approximately 15 hours advocating for improvements to labor laws applicable to garment workers. Support services: we continued to provide support services in the form of resource referral, nutritious meals, transportation, social activities, exchanges with workers in other industries, and computer training. We launched a womens'circle for our female indentified members to have a safe space to discuss their needs and organizing goals.
