Mission: To restore the historic synagogue renamed b'nai abraham museum and cultural center, in virginia, mn so it benefits the people of ne minnesota and beyond. To reuse the building: * as a venue for cultural programs including lectures, concerts, recitals and special events. * to house changing exhibits recording the history of the range's diverse ethnic and religious heritage as well as other exhibits of interest to the communities. * as a venue for educational programs in collaboration with our partners, the virginia area historical society, local schools and colleges, and other agencies and organizations such as the st. Louis county historical society. * to provide exhibits and programs that draw visitors from elsewhere which helps boost the local economy. * to house a permanent exhibit recording the history of jewish settlement on the range. To provide an endowment for the building's maintenance and future needs in perpetuity.
Programs: Tours of building twice per week from the end of may 2014 until the end of august by the virginia area historical society. Exhibits of historic work by deceased artist duane bryers and lecture by his nephew. Duane alar, exhibit of paintings by artist carl gawboy, and fabric exhibit by members of the range fiber art guild. Concerts by connie evingson and her jazz group, northern lights music festival under veda zuponcic, pat surface and the boundry water boys,, the harbormasters barbershop chorus, and other music singing groups. Jeffrey smith read excerpts from his novel mesabi pioneers. Antique road show appraisals. Temple israel duluth shabbat on the range, visits by youth groups from temple israel minneapolis and bet sholom minnepolis. A "transfer of memory" exhibit depicting the story of minnesota survivors of the holocaust with photos and done with the coordination and cooperation with prof susan devereux of the mesabi range technical college along with visits by numerous range school students. A presentation of a holocaust program in conjunction with the jewish christian relations council of the upper midwest and the dakotas with steve hunegs and tours of the exhibit transfer of memory three times per week in october. Ongoing rehabilitation of the building including the partial completion of a new kitchen and the continuing rehabilitation of the downstairs exit which was needing fixing.
