Mission: Education and promotion of sustainable food and farming systems in washington state.
Programs: The farm to school program works to promote and enhance school purchasing of washington grown foods. The fresh food in schools project was completed in 2014 and regional coordinators provided hands on assistance to 20 school districts across the state to increase their purchasing of washington grown fruits and vegetables. Wsffn worked in collaboration with project partners: wsda farm to school, office of superintendent of public instruction, wa state pta, lutheran public policy office of washington, pcc natural markets, and the childhood obesity prevention coalition. Fresh food in schools was funded in part by wsda through the usda specialty crop block grant program and the wa women's foundation.
focus on farming program - the goal of the focus on farming program is to provide fiscal management services for a one day conference that gathers a wide spectrum of farmers, ranchers, businesses, government, non-profit organizations and individuals that are interested in food and farming systems. Support services include helping to plan the agenda, secure the logistical details, advertise, implement the one day event and track the conference income and expenses.
legislative - the goal of our legislative program is to educate, organize and advocate for food and farming systems to become economically prosperous, ecologically sound and socially equitable. We promote programs and policies that ensure equitable access to fresh washington-grown food for all washingtonians regardless of income. Increasing access to washington-grown food improves the nutrition of our residents, the economic viability of our farmers, and reduces packaging, refrigeration, storage and transportation which generates less waste and uses less energy. Purchasing washington grown food keeps our dollars in the state, strengthens the economic vitality of our communities and helps keeps our farmers farming. Annually we advocate for programs and policies that advance a more sustainable food and farming system which includes the senior and women infant & children farmers market nutrition programs. Our legislative program includes providing support for the good food coalition.
