Mission: The fiji theater company's mission is to create and tour innovative multi- disciplinary works of theater and art that explore the intersections of history, race, art, and technology in the modern world.
Programs: In 2016-2017, ping chong + company completed the following activities:collidescope 3. 0: adventures in pre and post-racial america is a new multidisciplinary work by ping chong and talvin wilks, developed at the wake forest university in north carolina. Collidescope uses theater, movement, video projections and a collaged soundscape to create a collision course view of the legacy and psyche behind the history of racial violence in america. Beyond sacred: voices of muslim identity - a work in the undesirable elements series exploring the diverse experiences of young muslim new yorkers. The goal of beyond sacred is to illuminate daily experiences of muslim new yorkers, and work towards greater communication and understanding among muslim and non-muslim communities in nyc. Beyond sacred was commissioned by laguardia performing arts center where it premiered in april 2015. In fy 17, pcc gave 11 performances of beyond sacred in new york, virginia, north carolina, michigan, washington and california. Additionally, pcc hosted two poetry events in partnership with city lore, highlighting the work of muslim poets in nyc. Pcc conducted developmental residencies in nyc and alaska for alaxsxa|alaska, a new work about the cultural history of alaska. The company presented 3 work in progress performances at lincoln center education in may 2017. A new ue project: south of the 8, in partnership with la jolla playhouse, was developed by sara zatz and daniela rivera about southeast san diego. South of the 8 was presented for 4 performances in san diego in april 2017. Pccs secret survivors documentary and toolkit is in use by social services organizations across the usa and in mexico. Screenings/workshops were offered by partner organizations in ny, california and oregon among other states. Secret histories pcc presented performances of secret histories for nyc public school students in schools in manhattan, ny as well as in newark, nj. Secret histories is the professional performance affiliated with pccs arts education program. Each performance was followed by a facilitated q+a with the cast. Arts education and training in fy17, pcc continued its partnerships with ms 191/museum magnet school in manhattan, working with 8th grade students for a third year, and completed a second year of partnership with ps 84 in manhattan, working with 4th grade students. Pcc added three educational residencies in fy17: one for 3rd grade students at ps154 in the bronx and two for 6th grade students at ms 256 in manhattan. Pcc also continued its ongoing partnership with global kids, a youth leadership organization in nyc. A new partnership was developed in newark nj with njpac, leading to 4 new partnerships with newark high schools: technology high school, east side high school, barringer high school, and american history high school. Pcc led a class at the new school for drama in spring 2017, returning for the 2nd year, taught by ryan conarro, sara zatz, and others. Ping led a master class. In june 2016 sara zatz and ping chong served as lead facilitators for the immigrant experience in california through literature and theatre, a national endowment for the humanities summer institute in san jos, california, serving 25 high school teachers.
