Mission: To ensure fairness for indigent defendants facing the death penalty and to help address systemic inequalities in the justice system's handling of capital cases.
Programs: Fair trial initiative, inc. (fti) provided legal services for approximately 45 indigent defendants facing the death penalty through programs in collaboration with private attorneys, public defenders and fti staff which included five interns in the fields of law and social work. In addition to capital cases, fti defended approximately 101 individuals charged with misdemeanors. These services provided new fellows an opportunity to enhance their courtroom skills and to achieve the required courtroom experience for participation in capital cases.
through the north carolina coalition for a moratorium, fti coordinated a campaign to educate the general public as well as lawmakers throughout north carolina concerning the identified flaws in the administration of capital punishment.
