Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Birth Defects & Genetic Diseases, Developmentally Disabled Centers, Disabilities, Health, Human Services, Residential Care & Adult Day Programs

Mission: Enable was founded to enable individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives within the community.

Target demographics: Enable assists persons who have permanent or chronic disabilities. The disability may be physical or cognitive and it causes difficulties with communication, self-care, mobility or the ability to live independently. There are no age restrictions for services. We support individuals of all ages. However, some services have restrictions because of the type of funding received to support the service. Since we receive funds from the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), some services are limited to persons eligible for DDD services. For DDD, the physical or mental impairment must be apparent before age 22 and be lifelong. This includes conditions such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, spina bifida, autism and other neurological impairments. Special funding through the United Way of Greater Mercer County particularly allows Enable to assist persons who are elderly and those whose disability may be the result of an injury or of a medical condition such as multiple sclerosis, stroke or other debilitating illness. Enable does not provider service to persons whose primary disability is mental illness or substance abuse.

Programs: Our Services In-Home Services offer an individual help with cooking, shopping, errands, transportation, laundry and personal care in a person’s own home. Residential services through group homes and apartments in central NJ provide a home and supportive services by staff including 24-hour help. Accessibility Services result in home modifications such as ramps, wider doors, and stairglides that allow individuals to continue to live in their own home. Day Program and Day Supports allow individuals to choose day time activities that explore interests, skills and may involve volunteer and paid work. Respite Care, relief to family members who give round-the-clock care, is provided in a variety of forms, in-home or out-of-home. Care Management for persons who may have disabilities due to aging or illness, connects persons with a variety of services. Family Support Stipends are overseen by Enable for 200 families who receive State funds for equipment, assistive technology, summer camp or respite care.

Under the new CEO the organization is total mess, total failure, staff not returning calls to family members, programs not able to meet the needs of participants.

This is a great service and has helped my family tremendously! I would strongly recommend you speak with Enable to learn more about how they can help. It's a great place to start!

I have been involved with Enable for several years starting as a voluteer on the Gala Commitee and now as a Board Member. The organization has grown over time and cotinues to tirelessly pursue its mission to make better lives for people with disabilitys. This was so evident to me at a recent visit to one of our group homes and and spending time with those indiduals.

During the summer of 2008, I got to know three residents of Enable's Benford group home and write their biographies. First, Enable's Volunteer Coordinator helped match me with a project that would work well for both me and Enable. She explained to me why those particular "consumers" would be best to work with and helped me create a schedule for visiting. As I spent time with the consumers, I saw that the relationships that we formed were mutually beneficial because of the informed and careful way in which Enable matches its consumers with volunteers. The staff at Enable was more than willing to answer any questions that I had about interacting with the consumers, and they always supported the activities that the consumers and I did together. The group home was clean and organized. Each of the three consumers said that, in general, they enjoy living in community with the other consumers and that they like the day trips that the group home staff arrange. The sense of family fostered in the group home created an environment in which the consumers could thrive and be happy. I strongly recommend supporting Enable in its efforts to bring that sense of belonging to even more individuals with disabilities.

My family and I have been involved with Enable from the beginning for over 20 years now. Enable staff, and board go over and beyond to make the life of our clients more fullfilling and rewarding. I am amazed at the hard work and devotion that our staff conducts on a regular basis, and our board and various committes our very active and involved. Enable, their clients, and their clients families have given my family so much more then we have given them. Our experience with Enable has been rich and rewarding. My wife, daughter & son-in-law, son & daughetr-in-law, and now my grandchildren continue to assist Enable in way that may be helful.

I am the guardian of a 54 year old woman with Down's Syndrome. Patricia has been living in an Enable managed Group Home for 15 years. Enable provides her with a safe, caring environment. She is happy in her living situation which is very important to me. Because of the quality of the services that we receive in the Group Home, Patricia has recently moved to the Enable Day Program. I believe that there's an advantage to having her fully immersed in the services of Enable. The agency is providing services for her "whole self" which assures me that her potential will be realized.
