Mission: Our mission is to inspire students to dream big, act with character and purpose, and reach their potential as leaders in the community. The emily krzyzewski center serves as a college access hub in durham, nc, propelling academically-focused, low-income k-12 students and graduates towards success in college through its k to college programs while also offering college information and advising support to any local high school student through the game plan: college program. Through broader facility partnerships, thousands of additional students and community members use the center as a place to convene, learn, and grow.
Programs: K to college programs - the center's k to college programs (pioneer scholars, scholars to college, and scholars on campus) propel academically-focused, low-income k-12 students and graduates towards success in college. The pioneer scholars program ensures that our elementary and middle school students are building academic skills, achieving in school, and laying the foundation for future college success. This year, each of our 92 pioneer scholars students participated in up to 765 hours of structured tutoring, enrichment, and leadership programming at the center. The scholars to college program ensures that high school students challenge themselves academically and personally, becoming graduating seniors who are scholarship-eligible and college-ready. This year, 125 scholars to college students participated in an average of 3. 66 hours of weekly curriculum-based instruction, individualized advising, tutoring, act preparation, and other enrichment activities at the center. The scholars on campus program ensures that students successfully transition to higher education by supporting their academic and campus engagement, career planning, and financial responsibility. This year, 43 scholars on campus students participated in workshops, individualized advising, one-on-one campus visits, and a weekend retreat. Student progress is evaluated across all three programs using qualitative and quantitative assessment. The following results from the 2017-18 academic year highlight just some of our student successes. 93% of students increased their act aspire score in at least one subject; 74% of our students are on-track in english and 78% are on-track in math. The 28 students in scholars to college class of 2018 earned 172 acceptances to 68 different colleges and universities, and $3. 2 million in scholarships and grants to the schools they will be attending. 100% of first year scholars on campus students persisted from semester 1 to semester 2. 87% of second year scholars on campus students persisted from year 1 to year 2 (compared to 74% of all college students nationally).
game plan: college - the game plan: college program provides information and advice to durham high school students, ensuring that they have the knowledge and support necessary to apply and enroll in college. The goal of the program is to ensure low-income, first-generation and/or students from traditionally under-represented backgrounds have access to high-quality information and the support they need to proactively plan for and access their best-fit college option. The program was developed in early 2016 and was piloted beginning in the fall. Workshops and advising are delivered by educators and peer advisors. In its two years of operation, game plan: college has served over 500 students.
facility partnerships - in addition to college access programming, the center enhances the impact of local organizations through facility partnerships by serving as a home and resource for nonprofits, schools, and community groups as they convene, learn, and grow. This year, 48 facility partners ran programs, hosted events, and held meetings at the center, serving more than 1,200 students and community members in an average week. The center provided space for free to over 90% of these partners, resulting in significant rental savings for these organizations.
