Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs
Mission: Wings uses "running" as a catalyst to empower native youths, leading to increased self-esteem, health & wellness, leadership & hope. Wings provides running & fitness camps, competitive running opportunities, leadership trainings, product distribuitons and community outreach programs.
Programs: Navajo nation jmi running & fitness (r&f) camps: wings receives funding from the navajo nation indian health services to conduct running and fitness(r&f) camps throughout the navajo nations in the united states. During 2017 wings conducted 15 camps and served approximately 828 participants. The free camps are open to youth ages 6-18 years old. Camps include running techniques, warm-ups and drills; fun native tailored games, mini workshops on diabetes, obesity, healty eating, and drug and alcohol useage.
n7 project: wings was awarded a $50,000 grant from n7 fund and also received a contribution of $6,815 from nike, inc to support running & fitness initiatives amongst the pueblos and in oklahoma. N7 funds now support a year round program for wings runners. The 19th annual coaches clinic saw 30 wings facilitators, who were all given the tools needed to mentor, teach and influence the american indian youth. Uniforms, supplies, equipment as well as travel, lodging and meals were provided to facilitators and in some cases to participants. This program also sponsored 9 running and fitness summer camps and served approximately 596 participants. Additionally this program sponsored after school development and programming.
grants and contributions are received by wings to support it's athletes at various running events. One of wings' best programs each year is the usatf cross country championships national team, which embodies the organization's philosophy of youth development year after year. Wings selects a men and women's team of junior student-athletes, ages 14-19 and provide the athletes with comprehensive training guidance, gear and travel accomodations as they perpare for the competition. Wings provide the student-athletes with a cross cultural learning experience that broadens their perspective on the world and fuels their ambitions for the future.
wings american indian running coaches clinic: the coaches clinic is a 2 1/2 day trainig clinic with presenters who are successful coaches in high schools and colleges providing instruction in running, warm-up techniques, team building, injuries, native running history etc. All hired running and fitness facilitators are required to attend the coaches clinic. Boston pursuit program: in partnership with boston athletic association and harvard university, wings started the boston "pursuit" program, which was designed to expose a select group of american indian high school juniors to the realities of the college admissions process and one of the world's major marathons. The students are able to visit colleges, cultural institutions and partake int he festivities of the marathon. Wings has partnered with several organizations in the new mexico area to better serve the native youth including pueblos, crossroads, global footprint youth relays/santa fe to buffalo thunder half-marathon, santa fe public schools native american student services and organized fun runs and races within the 19 nm pueblos.
