Causes: Arts & Culture, Singing & Choral Groups
Mission: The primary purpose of the durham children's choir is to provide an opportunity for music education to outstanding young singers in the greater durham north carolina community, so they may learn a wide variety of high quality choral music, both sacred and secular, and share that music with the community through public performances.
Programs: During the 2016 - 2017 year, the durham children's choir provided music education and performance opportunities to a diverse group of 79 children from durham, nc and the surrounding area. These children, in grades 2 -11, were from 33 different schools - public, private, charter and home schools. Children in grades 2 - 4 were in cantare, a preparatory choir. They focused on learning to sing as part of a group and learning basic music concepts. They performed twice during the year. The older students were in bel canto, the performance choir. Choir rehearsals included instruction in music theory and appreciation, and the broader community received the benefit of the outstanding musical performances by these youth during 11 different public performances throughout the year. The most exciting of these performances was with a children's music festival at carnegie hall in new york.
