Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Committed to helping the forgotten unwanted dogs who need us the most. We save dogs on their "last day" at high kill shelters, and find them new, loving forever homes. We save dogs of any breed or age, often dogs that other rescues have refused due to potentially expensive, but treatable medical conditions. All of our rescued dogs receive any necessary medical treatment, including surgery, as well as spay/neuter, all vaccinations and microchipping. We also save dogs with perceived behavioral issues, and get professional training if necessary. If at any point in the future, the adopting family can no longer care for their dog, we stand behind our rescue alumni for their lifetime. We will take back any dog, at any point in the future, and find them a new home. We feel we've made a promise to each dog that they will never be in a shelter again. Once a Dexter dog, always a Dexter dog!

Tried for over a year to adopt a dog that I fell in love with (Khloe)....Did everything possible, including videos and pictures, numerous e-mails and anything I could think of......They wouldn't respond, but kept posting her picture on their website until I notified Adopt a Pet that this organization appeared to be fraudulent and they had no intention of adopting this dog out. This organization fails to respond, won't keep in touch, and is just a sham! I will personally do anything/everything I can to discredit them.

As much as I want all the dogs to get rescued and I hate leaving a 1 star review for a shelter, I do not recommend anyone going with Dexter Foundation. Back in 2018, a friend was temporarily fostering a dog from the Dexter Foundation and I wanted to adopt the dog and give it a forever home. I tried to go through the formal process of submitting an application through Dexter Foundation's website, my friend also tried reaching out to her contact at Dexter Foundation and received no response. After multiple attempts of trying to reach someone, I ended up adopting the dog and not going through the formal process because that was impossible. This was 3 years ago. The chip for my dog is still under Dexter Foundation and I've been trying to get it transferred for the last 3 years and still no response. Someone FINALLY reached out to me and wants to schedule a house visit as a "formality" to get the chip transferred and to check up on our dog which I think I absurd granted I've already been taking care of my dog for several years already. I believe everything here is run by volunteers so it's understandable if they don't have consistent staff. The lack of response for so long is just unacceptable.

I had similar misfortune of coming across this site and also fell in love with a dog, which I was hoping to give to my wife as a birthday gift. Followed the indications, submitted my application and was following up on a weekly basis.
They at least have the decency to respond to my initial email stating my application was received and had many interested parties in adopting the dog and would have to make sure to find the right fit for the dog and that’s as far as I got.
I followed up on a weekly basis but never received a response at all after that initial email.
After a few weeks I did not see the dog on their website so I just assumed the puppy was adopted. Great for the puppy but I question how is it that they would know who the best fit is for the puppy if someone like myself and my wife were not even considered?
Normally do not leave comments nor ratings but this time I feel the process treated us so unfairly! I gave them one star only because of their initial (probably automated) email response! GGG

I contacted the foundation interested in a dog that just stole my heart. I received a follow-up e-mail stating he was still available, but no information on setting up a visit or a look at my home. I responded back stating I was still interested, but did not hear back. 2 and 1/2 months later, I get an e-mail stating he has been moved to another rescue. They had time to redo their website, but I can see that many of the dogs from 3 months ago are still there. I'm sure they can get volunteers to help with e-mails if they need to, so it's a shame the poor pup has been months without a home.

We were interested in a particular dog and emailed this organization and asked them to call.

Their response?

"We'll try and call you back".

If they have to "try" to call back, something is definitely wrong.

I will never contact them again. And I hope others will not either.

I would have loved to have posted this on YELP but this rescue is not on there. Too bad. More people would have seen this.

The dog would have gotten a good home and it only took a return phone call to make it happen.
