The Denis Theatre is one of the reasons why I moved to Mt. Lebanon. In fact, walking distance to the Denis was one of the main criteria in the selection of my future home. One of the few independent film theatres in the Pittsburgh area, I used to drive across town to watch international and artistic movies at the Denis.
Unfortunately, the Denis closed its doors a few years ago, and now (again) I have to drive into town in order to catch the movies I like. The Denis was part of the heart of Mt. Lebanon, and the Denis Theatre Foundation is actively trying to bring it back to life. When the Denis reopens (and I am sure it will), it will increase the number of independent film theatres in the Pittsburgh area by a whopping 20%. A community that takes pride in its culture and arts scene needs independent film theatres like the Denis. Without them, we might as well resign ourselves to summer blockbusters and packaged remakes, or hope that some of the multiplexes will pick up some of the many worthy independent and foreign films produced every year.
I have donated money to the Foundation on several occasions, and they have slow but steady progress in their efforts to reopen the Denis. They have already purchased the building and they are raising funds for the complete remodeling of the theater, which will include stages for the performing arts.
