Mission: Paper Road/Tibet grew out of the realization that hand papermaking in Tibet, which has not been practiced for nearly 50 years, will be completely lost if the elderly practitioners are not brought together with young students to transfer their collective experience and wisdom. PR/T has the fortune of partnering in this effort with the Jatson Chumig Welfare Special School in Lhasa, Tibet. JCWSS is an orphanage handicraft center teaching traditional Tibetan handicraft skills to the children as vocational training. PR/T has assisted the school to set up a papermaking training program at the school, training the first group of young Tibetan papermakers, continues research to locate elderly practitioners and to share the basic fiber preparation skills with some of the poorest regions of Tibet. PR/T also works with a dedicated group of Tibetans, Tibetan Handicraft Industry, in Kathmandu. Nimto Sherpa, one of the THI partners is a project member and teaches at the school in Lhasa. PR/T sells products from THI in Kathmandu and the Jatson Chumig School to support the programs in Tibet.
