My husband has volunteered for Contact Helpline for 33 years, and I have volunteered for 22 years. It has been the most rewarding volunteer experience you could imagine! Knowing that we can make a difference in the lives of people in our community who are lonely, depressed or struggling to make ends meet is important to us. We know our active listening skills are important in today’s world, where it is hard to find someone to really listen without judging or telling you what to do. Callers are grateful that, through our human services information and referral service, we can connect them to the helpful community resources they seek. Callers seeking help receive empathy and compassion, not an automated menu. By being there to listen, 24/7, callers can reach out for emotional support, too.
Review from Guidestar
I have volunteered for over 22 years with this organization. We have helped thousands of people who were in need of financial assistance or suggestions on finding ways to help themselves. We have also helped thousands of people both locally and , ever increasingly, around the country by being a listening ear when they are troubled in any way including the mentally ill, lonely, confused, depressed, etc. I have learned to listen instead of judging and giving my opinion. This has gone a long way in making me more open and helpful to those around me.
