Mission: The Conscious Consumer was formed in 1999 to provide consumers an easy way to access information about the socially responsible practices of corporations. The idea for the organization originated from a belief that the power of consumer spending is an important economic tool for societal improvement. Many consumers are concerned with the political and social implications of their purchases. By providing free information about corporate responsibility, the Conscious Consumer allows consumers to reinforce their political and social philosophies in the marketplace.

The organization relies contributions from individuals and foundations and does not accept funding from corporations to ensure the integrity of its mission.

In an effort to ensure that all individuals can access the information found on the Conscious Consumer web page, the organization also coordinates volunteers who show individuals who do not have computers how to visit the web page from public library and community center PCs.
