Nonprofit Overview

Causes: AIDS, AIDS Research, Health

Mission: Dedicated to hiv and hepatitis c clinical research, treatment, education, and financial assistance for approved hiv drug treatments and health insurance coverage.

Programs: Hdap: cri administers the commonwealth of massachusetts' hiv drug assistance program (hdap) providing life-saving medications, prescription co-payments, and health insurance to more than 12,000 clients in need each year. Hdap provides access to critical hiv-related medications and health insurance for eligible massachusetts residents who are otherwise unable to obtain these lifesaving drugs or health insurance. In providing these services, hdap plays a crucial role in serving the healthcare needs of a diverse population: more than half of the hdap enrollees are from communities of color, and approximately three-quarters of hdap clients have incomes of less than two-hundred percent of the federal poverty level. The program is among the nation's most complete drug assistance programs for people living with hiv. Cri/hdap staff also provides assistance to both providers and clients in accessing and negotiating changes in insurance and entitlement programs, including change brought about by implementation of the federal affordable care act.

education: through its partnership with the university of massachusetts medical school, cri manages the mass. Local performance site of the new england aids education and training center (neaetc) to provide education, skills-building and clinical mentoring opportunities for health care providers to address effective counseling, diagnosis, treatment and care management of individuals living with hiv/aids. Neaetc developed, enrolled and completed over 1,000 programs serving more than 9,000 providers throughout the region with over 100 of those programs serving nearly 3,000 providers within the massachusetts local performance site within the most recent program year. Neaetc's focus on innovation also resulted in a new teaching model connecting 14 community health centers throughout massachusetts with program faculty live via webcast, making interactive discussions possible - a model now replicated throughout other geographical areas.

community-based research: cri provides clinical trial participants with the opportunity to test new medications and treatment strategies with the goal of identifying easier and safer drug regimens. These new regimens help patients live more productive, comfortable, and healthy lives. Cri has initiated more than fifty of its own innovative physician-led research studies that continue to play a critical role in shaping the effectiveness of hiv and hepatitis c treatment. Cri has done some of this work in collaboration with a research network linking over 25 other community-based clinical trials sites throughout the united states as well as trials sponsored by the national institutes of health. Finally, cri's physician/researchers present clinical research trial data to researchers and people with hiv at international conferences throughout the year.
