Mission: Tucson refugee ministry educates, equips and mobilizes the church to serve refugees in our community and beyond
Programs: Tucson refugee ministry (trm) builds bridges between the church and refugees. During 2017, tucson became home for approximately 654 refugees who had fled violence, oppression and persecution in their native countries. Waiting an average of 17 years, these refugees went through a rigorous selection process first with the united nations high commission for refugees (unhcr). Once approved by the unhcr, they then had to pass strict security screenings by multiple u. S. Agencies before being placed in cities throughout the united states. When refugees arrive in tucson, trm welcomes them with love and compassion by partnering with resettlement agencies, training volunteers from churches, and befriending the refugees. Specific accomplishments during 2017 included educating over 3,000 people through presentations, workshops and training, mobilizing 30 churches and organizations, and hosting international kids kamp for 230 youth from refugee families. Trm also matched approximately 70 volunteers through church groups with newly arrived refugee families through "welcome partnerships. " these groups offered ongoing friendship and support as refugee families learn to navigate life in america. In addition, trm staff and volunteers participated in special events including baby showers, an international thanksgiving dinner, and christmas caroling at an international apartment community.
