Two Years ago I was given the opportunity to volunteer as the lead Lion Dance instructor at the Chinese FreeMasons Athletic Club. I was honored to be able to take the position knowing that other members felt that I had enough knowledge in the art of Lion Dance to teach. Every Friday from March till December I taught a group of 10 teenagers a tradition that has been passed down for hundreds of years.
Teaching Lion Dance is meaningful to me because I once was one of many teenagers that part-took in this free lion dance program. I remember when I was 16 and eager to learn the next set or routines every Friday so I could get my chance to go perform. Even though Lion Dance was only taught on Fridays, the Chinese FreeMasons Athletics Club had it's doors opened 7 days a week for me and friends to go practice.
I am grateful to have learned the art of lion dance, an experience that I hold dear to my heart. Now I hope that one day one of these young men will find time to come back after college and pass on the tradition.
