Mission: Mission: the mission of children's theatre of charlotte (ctc) is to create exceptional theatre experiences, inspiring generations to explore the wonder of their world.
Programs: Professional theatre for youth: ctc is a fully producing, professional theatre company for youth and families housed at imaginon: the joe & joan martin center, a facility shared with the children's library branch of the charlotte-mecklenburg library. Ctc utilizes two state-of-the-art theatres at imaginon: the 550-seat mccoll family theatre and the 250-seat wells fargo playhouse. Scripts are selected based on artistic merit, age appropriateness, curricular connections, and the ability to create an emotional link between audience and story. Ctc production staff will partner with imaginon library staff to select some plays that are based on books to bring classic literary stories to life. In 2016-17, 6 mainstage productions were produced and performed at ctc's home facility, imaginon, in uptown charlotte. From september 2016 to may 2017, the resident touring company of ctc traveled throughout north and south carolina with 2 theatre productions, and the preschool tour took one (1) production for preschool-aged children throughout the charlotte region. Each touring production was also performed at imaginon at certain times throughout the year. Ctc also presented 5 limited runs of guest artist productions, complementing ctc's own season. Resource guides are developed for every ctc production to provide curricular connections to the nc standard course of study. To ensure theatre is a viable option for all young people in the region, ctc subsidizes approximately 2/3 of the cost of tickets for all school groups and provides reduced-cost tickets to families and service organizations. For each mainstage production, ctc offers at least one (1) american sign language-interpreted performance and one (1) sensory-friendly performance, which is designed to provide a safe and comfortable theatre experience for families who have a member or members on the autism spectrum or who have other sensory sensitivities. In 2016, ctc received the tya/usa harold oaks award for excellence in the field of theatre for young audiences. Fully dedicated to its focus on commisssioning, developing, and premiering new works for the canon of theatre for young audiences, ctc premiered 2 world premiere plays for its mainstage season in 2016-17, and one (1) for its touring company. During the 2016-17 season, ctc served over 160,000 young people and families with theatre programming.
theatre education programs: in 2016-17, ctc offered multi-week, yearlong, and summer enrichment classes at its facility and two satellite locations. For its younger students, classes develop self-esteem, social skills, and creative thinking. The alcohol & substance abuse prevention program delivered an issue oriented play to more than 10,000 eighth graders in all public middle schools. In 2016-17 children's theatre served nearly 65,000 young people with its innovative educational experiences. In 2016-17, the theatre provided almost 400 scholarships to students interested in enrolling in classes or camps at its facility and satellite locations. Ctc also offered limited and no-fee arts education programming to nearly 700 children in 16 community sites.
