Mission: Provide professional training in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and to enhance psychodynamic study through research and scholarship. It applies these principles to therapeutic services for the public, offering treatment for children and adults at reduced fees, to the benefit of underserved communities.
Programs: Therapeutic services: 1) the adult psychotherapy clinic, a reduced fee psychotherapy clinic within the institute, employs approximately 20 licensed psychotherapists and a group of experienced student fellows, offering consultation and psychotherapy to adult individuals and couples seeking help for difficulties with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and a wide variety of other concerns. 2) the barr-harris childrens grief centers mission is to provide therapeutic services to bereaved children and their families; to make intervention more accessible; to heighten awareness of the potentially harmful short- and long-term effects of loss; and to provide training and consultation for teachers, clergy, mental health workers, and other involved community members. 3) the center for child and adolescent psychotherapy offers a range of services to help children, adolescents and their families when emotional problems hinder emotional growth and development.
professional training: 1) the psychoanalytic education program is a multifaceted course of study intended to expand and refine the capacity of mental health professionals to understand and work with patients in depth. 2) the adult psychotherapy training programs educational goals are to apply psychodynamic principles to clarify clinical problems, define therapeutic goals and guide interventions in the clinicians practice of psychotherapy. 3) the child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program (cappt) is a unique four-year part-time clinically oriented psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program focused on training mental health professionals in the intensive treatment of children and adolescents who are experiencing psychological and developmental difficulties.
continuing education: educational programs, workshops, lectures and conferences are offered to further the knowledge of psychoanalytic and mental health topics for mental health practitioners and the public.
