Causes: International, International Agricultural Development
Mission: To sustainably increase the productivity of maize and wheat systems to ensure global food security and reduce poverty.
Programs: "global maize program" (gmp) the world faces the challenge of growing more maize, responsibly and sustainably. Cimmyt collaborates with national agricultural research institutions, non-government and community-based organizations, seed sector organizations, regional research networks, other cgiar centers, private companies, and advanced research institutions to tackle the problem on a global scale by providing farmers the best seed, agronomy, and information needed to increase yields. -provide diverse, high-yielding maize varieties that withstand infertile soils, drought, pests, and diseases. -conduct research to help farmers exploit the full potential of improved seed while conserving soil and water resources. -explore new market opportunities for small farmers. -provide training opportunities in maize breeding and crop management research.
"conservation agriculture program" (cap) the growing importance of natural resource management in agriculture requires a reversal of current resource degradation in key areas. Climate change is raising temperatures and changing weather patterns in ways that accentuate extremes like flooding and drought. Water resources for irrigated agriculture are becoming scarce. In a positive vein, research increasingly points to the potential for significant productivity gains through improved farming practices. Conservation agriculture is a set of principles that build on systems agronomy research developed by cimmyt and partners around the world, particularly on cropping methods that simultaneously boost productivity and reduce resource degradation in cropping systems that include maize or wheat. Through partnerships with national agricultural research systems, agri-business and other cgiar centers, cimmyt works toward an ultimate version of widespread use of sustainable systems by smallholder wheat and maize farmers, based on the principles of conservation agriculture. The goals are to improve rural incomes and livelihoods through sustainable management of agro-ecosystem productivity and diversity while minimizing unfavorable environmental impacts.
"research partnership program" (rpp) program under the oversight of the ddr-research and partnerships that includes the crps and flow-through grants: -cgiar research program maize (crp maize): international collaboration between more than 300 partners from the public and private sectors, national institutions, international research organizations and seed companies. This unique partnership seeks to mobilize global resources in maize research and development to achieve a greater strategic impact on maize-based farming systems in africa, south asia and latin america. -cgiar research program on wheat (crp wheat): international, collaborative effort to raise the productivity of wheat farming systems, address the global threat of stem rust disease and help wheat farmers in developing countries grow their crops in hotter conditions with less water and less fertilizer.
