Mission: The bush global health initiative, d/b/a pink ribbon red ribbon, is an independent affiliate of the george w. Bush institute, and coordinates action to save women and girls' lives from cancer in countries where the need is greatest. By working with public-and private-sector organizations, pink ribbon red ribbon builds on the success and lessons of the u. S. President's emergency plan for aids relief (pepfar), and, with the ongoing commitment of president george w. Bush and mrs. Laura bush, designs and implements programs for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer and the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Programs: Pink ribbon red ribbon is a public-private partnership that leads coordinated action to save lives from breast and cervical cancer in low-resource settings. Through greater access to prevention and treatment, healthy women strengthen families, communities, and nations, driving global economic growth and prosperity. Key achievements across all prrr programs from january to december 2017 include: - prrr programs provided via screening for cervical cancer for 152,718 women. - 6,375 of these women were treated with cryotherapy or leep for cervical cancer. (see schedule o for continuation)- 43,552 girls received all doses of the hpv vaccine. - a total of 5,632 women were screened for breast cancer. As a result, since inception, prrr and its partners have: - screened over half a million women for cervical cancer in botswana, ethiopia, tanzania, and zambia;- treated almost 32,000 of these women for pre-cancerous lesions; - vaccinated almost 150,000 girls aged 9 to 13 against hpv through pilot programs and demonstration projects designed to pave the way for nationwide campaigns; and- screened nearly 40,000 women for breast cancer in ethiopia, tanzania, and zambia. In 2017, pink ribbon red ribbon directly provided, or worked with partners to provide, the following services:zambia:- in february of 2017, the government of the republic of zambia launched the national cancer control strategic plan, which was developed with support from prrr partners. - prrr supported the zambian ministry of health in submitting their application in september to gavi for funding for a nationwide hpv vaccination program beginning in 2018. - prrr participated and co-convened a susan g. Komen-sponsored breast cancer co-creation lab in september in lusaka, zambia, in which stakeholders worked to create a roadmap for breast cancer control in zambia. Tanzania:- prrr and partners continue to support tanzania's cervical cancer screening and treatment program. In april 2017, prrr welcomed cuamm as a new implementing partner in tanzania, providing cervical cancer screening and treatment services in the morogoro and iringa regions. Additionally, for the first time in the seven years of the national cervical cancer prevention program, the government set aside its own funds to procure 100 cryotherapy machines and nine leep machines, and plans to scale up screening to 100 new health facilities by the end of 2018. - in the fourth quarter of 2017, prrr initiated an evaluation of implementation efforts under the national strategic plan of 2011-2016. The results of the evaluation will inform the development of the second five-year strategy in april 2018 and a broader evaluation of the cervical cancer prevention program. - prrr also supported tanzania's gavi application for a nationwide hpv vaccine roll-out, expected to begin in 2018. - through the vodacom grant, the t-marc bus transportation program, with support from prrr, has successfully supported 219 cervical cancer patients to ocean road cancer institute (orci) in tanzania from january to december of 2017. - on world cancer day, february 4, prrr and the mohcdgec announced winners in the "hostels for hope" international design competition. A team of students from the ethiopian institute of architecture, building construction and city development created the winning design for a hostel at orci in dar es salaam, tanzania. Emanuele santini, from masa studio in rome, italy, submitted the winning design for a hostel at bugando medical center in mwanza, tanzania. - prrr worked with susan g. Komen, the university of texas md anderson cancer center, and the government of tanzania, to draft the first nationally standardized treatment protocols for breast and cervical cancer in tanzania, presented at a workshop in october 2017, and guidelines for early diagnosis of breast cancer, to be finalized by the end of the year. Botswana:- in april 2017, prrr led a delegation headed by president and mrs. Bush to botswana to promote efforts to combat women's cancers, evaluate the successes of the pink ribbon red ribbon partnership in country, review the advances made by the government of botswana, and see new technologies available to screen and treat cervical cancer. - hpv diagnostic testing was piloted in october 2017 in botswana by prrr implementing partner jhpiego. This six-month feasibility study will examine adoption of hpv testing in four health centers and one district hospital. Prrr worked with jhpiego to write the study protocol, which will be implemented with jhpiego internal funds. Ethiopia:- the government of ethiopia plans to open 1,500 screen-and-treat sites with the aim of reaching every district of the country by 2022. During 2017, prrr and partners supported the government of ethiopia to open 59 see-and-treat sites in the two most populous regions, southern nations nationalities and peoples and addis ababa. - prrr tested the mobileodt digital cervicography device in ethiopia through implementing partner cuamm, with acs funding. The results were presented by cuamm at the african organization for research and training in cancer (aortic) conference held in kigali, rwanda in november 2017. Namibia:- the prrr program in namibia was officially launched with a visit from president and mrs. Bush in april 2017. Prrr worked with the ministry of health and social services, cdc-namibia, and other stakeholders to budget pepfar funding and plan the first national cervical cancer screening program. Four cervical cancer screening sites were approved by mohss in pepfar priority districts for screen-and-treat programs expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018. - prrr and partners also provided support to the mohss to write the first-ever national cancer control plan and cervical cancer service delivery guidelines, which will be released in quarter three of 2018. Peru:- pink ribbon red ribbon and partners participated in meetings with the ministry of health of peru to plan a hpv diagnostic program in tumbes and worked with multiple stakeholders to help launch cervical cancer guidelines. Other prrr accomplishments:- pink ribbon red ribbon worked with the cdc foundation and the world health organization to help develop the first-ever harmonized toolkit for measuring impact and outcomes across country cervical cancer programs. This toolkit - "improving data for decision-making in global cervical cancer programs" - will be published in 2018. - in january, pink ribbon red ribbon created and presented a webinar with the international aids society on the link between hiv and cervical cancer to over 200 participants around the world. - pink ribbon red ribbon and the global fund to fight aids, tuberculosis, and malaria (gfatm) signed a memorandum of understanding (mou) on april 5, 2017. The mou recognizes that both parties share the mutual goal of fostering and supporting partnerships between the public and private sectors and people affected by hiv/aids and cervical cancer, a recognized co-morbidity, to improve health and wellbeing in countries and communities most in need. - the second capitol hill day was held in april, during which representatives from pink ribbon red ribbon, the american cancer society cancer action network (can) and 11 other partner organizations visited congressional offices to urge lawmakers to help end cervical cancer deaths worldwide by integrating prevention and treatment into existing u. S. Global health assistance programs. - prrr presented two posters at the nci international cancer screening network meeting in june entitled "mass outreach campaigns to hard-to-reach female populations for cancer screening in the united republic of tanzania and "bridging the gap between cervical cancer screening outcomes and pathology results: experiences from selected pink ribbon red ribbon-supported countries, and an oral presentation entitled "mathematical modeling and implications for population-based cervical cancer screening programs in sub-saharan africa. Supplemental information on 2017 public private partnership achievements:in addition to the direct program and administrative support prrr programmed that is reported in the audited financial statements, the public private partnership leveraged an additional $13 million in funding and donated goods and services in 2017 that flowed directly to the field. As a result, since inception, prrr has leveraged almost $80 million, of which $70 million in funds and donated goods and services have flowed directly from third parties to implementers in the field.
