Mission: Bridges to Home connects educational travel abroad to community service at home, by funding low-income undergraduates to translate lessons learned overseas into creative service projects in their home communities. Tourism rivals the weapons trade as the largest industry in the world. The consequences of tourism, while less dramatic than mine fields and bomb craters, significantly detract from the quality of life of local people. By minimizing social costs, new forms of travel promise great benefits. For example, many forms of "ecotourism" strive to bring revenue into local communities while tying the future of that revenue to the conservation of species and ecosystems. Concerted efforts have been made to improve and reduce the effects of tourism on the people and places visited. However, the reverse process, in which tourists are changed, has not been nearly as acclaimed. Bridges to Home focuses on increasing the benefits that travel brings to communities back home.
Programs: Bridges to Home helps low-income students to develop creative service projects in their home communities, while helping those students earn back the cost of travel overseas.
