Mission: We are dedicated to:
• Improving the reading and writing and math skills of young people and helping them become self-directed and motivated learners;
• Involving the community by providing trained volunteers who serve as tutors;
• Stimulating the development of tutorial programs by providing a comprehensive curriculum, individualized lesson plans and tutor training services.
Results: We test students when they enter and leave the program and data is analyzed by an outside educational consultant. Our students on average improve 2 grade levels for 8 months of tutoring.
Target demographics: Middle school and high school students in Mountain View in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties who are performing at least 2 years below grade level.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 70-85 students/year.
Programs: JustREAD and JustMATH are intervention programs for youth who are struggling in school or who are learning English. One-on-one tutoring, in JustREAD/JustMATH tutoring centers at school during school hours, provides 6th – 12th graders with the fundamentals of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and basic math skills that they should have learned in earlier grades.
JustREAD has had proven success building the reading and math skills of 6th through 12th graders who are scheduled by their teachers during school hours for tutoring. Teens who can learn proficiently usually stay in school and off the street. We believe that knowing reading and math skills holds the promise that a struggling youngster who is failing in school can become a self-motivated lifelong learner and a productive member of the community.
