Mission: Black Public Media (BPM), formerly known as National Black Programming Consortium develops, produces, funds, and distributes media content about the African American and global Black experience. Our mission is to commit to a fully realized expression of democracy and we accomplish this by supporting diverse voices through training, education, and investment in visionary content makers. For 40 years, BPM has addressed the needs of unserved and underserved audiences. BPM continues to address historical, contemporary, and systemic challenges that traditionally impede the development and distribution of black stories.
Programs: Media content program development:nbpc provides production funding to independent producers and acquires completed programs for distribution to various public media outlets (pbs, american public television, wgbh/world), and produces its own award winning public television series afropop: the ultimate cultural exchange. Nbpc invited eleven independent producers from around the country to participate in the 360 incubator + fund, a six week professional development program culminating in a project pitch to industry professionals. Three projects were ultimately funded to produce pilots two broadcast and one web series. In addition, nbpc provided r&d and completion funding for seven new documentary programs.
digital media program development:through its digital media initiatives, nbpc produces interactive multimedia projects such as black folk dont, provides funding to independent producers creating web based media, and acquires completed short programs for distribution on pbs. Org. Nbpc ran its first ever hackathon, inviting four producers to work with developers to create gaming prototypes of the non fiction program. Nbpc partnered with blackout for human rights, to produce a live stream panel of experts and artists discussing the flint, michigan water crisis. The live stream was hosted by van jones. Nbpc acquired teacher from project involve for the pbs online film festival. Nbpcs digital media footprint has produced a robust media website that offers a thoughtful and insightful look into the experiences of african americans and the people of the african diaspora.
outreach and engagement:through its outreach and engagement initiatives, nbpc has connected public media content with underserved communities, provided professional development training to independent producers committed to bringing relevant public media to underserved audiences, and developed discussion guides and toolkits that further engage audiences with content we produce. Nbpc funded outreach and engagement activities for black women in medicine a documentary highlighting the achievements of black female doctors. Nbpc partners with public libraries, public schools, colleges and universities, the ny parks service, cultural institutions, and community organizations to screen and promote select content from the afropop series and nbpc funded programs. Nbpc staff also participated in workshops and on panels to promote nbpc content and attract new and emerging producers to apply for public media funding and/or submit new content.
