Mission: Beargrass writers' workshop gives writers from all walks of life the opportunity to create and grow together, establishing an artistic community of writers producing original works through workshops, readings, craft talks, one-on-one consultation, and individual time and space to write.
Programs: In august 2017, beargrass held its third annual, late-summer writing retreat at the historic e bar l ranch in greenough, montana. This retreats bring together 15-20 nationally-recognized authors/editors/agents with about 50 participating writers (some overnight guests, some day-passers) to create a community of writers through four days of workshops, readings, craft talks, one-on-one manuscript consultations, and time to write. The beargrass retreat has filled a writing-retreat gap in montana, a state with a rich literary history, yet no other such writing retreat. In just three years, beargrass retreats have gathered 40 writers and 80+ participants from a dozen states; our visiting writers have been roughly split between men and women, representing literature of the american west, the environment and native american issues, as well as non-regional topics of family, coming-of-age and gender identity. A few of the visiting writers who participated in the 2017 beargrass retreat at the e bar l included 2016 national book award longlist author brad watson, stanford stegner fellow callan wink, 2014 new york times notable author smith henderson, record-setting five-time pacific northwest booksellers literary award winner pete fromm, and 2012 pen/faulkner award finalist for fiction amelia gray. Acclaimed milkweed editions publisher daniel slager also participated in 2017, along with massie & mcquilkin literary agent julie stevenson.
