Mission: The battery conservancy was created in 1994 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational corporation to rebuild and revitalize the battery and castle clinton national monument, the park's major landmark. The conservancy spearheads the improvement efforts in partnership with city, state and federal agencies and with its private donors.
Programs: The battery conservancy partners with the city of new york's department of parks & recreation (nyc parks) to transform, maintain, operate, and program the battery, the public park at the southern tip of manhattan. In 2017, the conservancy significantly increased use of information technology to manage the park efficiently. The conservancy adopted industry-standard cartegraph software for asset and work-order management, and deployed video cameras throughout the park to identify maintenance needs in real time and to assist the new york police department with security. The conservancy enhanced park programming by partnering with outside groups and individuals to present bird walks, yoga sessions, and other activities. Mta-nyct completed construction of the battery bikeway in conjunction with its reconstruction of the south ferry subway station complex, enabling the conservancy to open the full bikeway and its gardens to the public. In addition, removal of construction fencing revealed a large open plaza at state and water streets, much of which will ultimately be included in the footprint of the new battery playscape. The battery conservancy installed chain-link fence to mark the playscape footprint. The conservancy continued to advocate and oversee the design of the battery playscape, now expected to begin construction in late 2019.
