Causes: Economic Development
Mission: To economically transform lives of local neighborhood residents and businesses by providing programs and services to empower the community, develop our commerce, and honor our culture. To address problems resulting from area poverty to stimulate neighborhood economic vitality by aggressive efforts to improve economic and housing development.
Programs: Chartered in 1979, aga began a process of transforming slum conditions in the avenida guadalupe neighborhood first constructing the udag funded plaza guadalupe in 1984, el parian in 1991, el progreso theater in 1996, and las oficinas in 2004. Since then, aga maintains a co-ownership contractural relationship with the city of san antonio to operate and manage neighborhood service and commercial properties in the avenida guadalupe project area ensuring access to a neighborhood dentist, an american indian cultural organization, a womens arts cooperative, workforce services both for workforce training and job placement, and immigrant services, amongst other amenities. In 2017 aga successfully solicited an audiologist as a tenant ensuring a needed service to the community. In 2017, aga in cooperation with the mexican consulate, provided financial literacy classes for mexican nationals living in the us. Please see continuation on schedule o under 990, part iii, 4a
aga maintains several culturally significant events that educate and provide the community with opportunities to experience traditional mexican holidays such as cinco de mayo, dieciseis de septiembre, and una noche en la gloria hispanic heritage month. Agas cultural activities promote and celebrate mexican american culture to generate and maintain vitality and development in the avenida guadalupe project area. Event income-generating activities provide opportunities for area non-profit organizations to fundraise for scholarships, school supplies, needed clothing for the poor, and gap-operating income for fledgling organizations which provide services to the community. Aga recognizes its cultural activities as mechanisms that promote neighborhood commercial revitalization in what is the poorest neighborhood in the city of san antonio. For fiscal year 2016-2017, aga generated approximately 600,000 in employee income for its 21 member staff and limited contractors, where agas lowest paid full-time employee makes no less than 53 of its highest paid executive.
