Mission: The mission of Attorneys for the Rights of the Child (ARC), founded in 1997, is to bring about an end to all forms of cutting of genitalia of persons other than fully consenting adults. These procedures are commonly referred to as "circumcision" or as "genital mutilation." We carry out our mission through a wide variety of activities including 1) educating the public, medical workers, the judiciary, and legal workers throughout the world regarding the harm caused by male and female genital cutting (MFGC) and the legal and human rights implications of MFGC; 2) responding to requests for information from the public, medical workers, the judiciary, and legal workers regarding MFGC; 3) media work, publications, and speaking engagements designed to provide these groups with up-to-date information regarding MFGC and the legal and human rights implications of MFGC; 4) coordinating, providing support for, tracking of, and direct participation in legal actions to protect children’s right to bodily integrity; and a broad range of other activities.
Programs: Attorneys for the Rights of the Child operates a legal advice service open to the public without charge. We publish a quarterly newsletter which is also distributed free of charge. We are involved in ongoing litigation. We participate in frequent professional conferences and educational workshops. We regularly publish pertinent articles in books, professional journals, and popular journals. We act as a clearinghouse of information on all litigation related to genital cutting, and also on all laws and bills related to genital cutting. Pertinent developments are immediately publicized via our newsletter, website, and email lists.
