Mission: The mission of the atlanta speech school is to help each person develop his or her full potential through language and literacy.
Programs: Positioned at the intersection of brain science and social science, the atlanta speech school effects transformative change in the lives of children and adults through research-based practices, innovation, advocacy, and partnerships with other organizations so that each child at the atlanta speech school and every child in georgia can acquire the language and literacy abilities essential for deciding his or her own future. Established in 1938, the atlanta speech school is the nation's most comprehensive center for language and literacy. As a core part of its mission, the school has never denied access to a child in need of its services as a result of a family's socioeconomic circumstances. Composed of four schools, five clinics, summer programs and a professional development center, each division shares one common mission: to work within each program and collaborate across all programs to help each person develop his or her full potential through language and literacy. Each day, extraordinarily dedicated and talented individuals make profound differences in the lives of the children and adults they serve helping them discover their voice, and the power of that voice, for a lifetime. In our four schools, we serve approximately 363 preschoolers and elementary-age children annually. The four schools are: the katherine hamm center (a listening, spoken language, and literacy program for children ages birth to six who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families); the wardlaw school (elementary school for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities); stepping stones (preschool for young children with significant speech and/or language delays); and, the anne & jim kenan preschool (a language and literacy focused early childhood education program that also serves as a mainstreaming site for children from the katherine hamm center).
our professional development program shares the atlanta speech school's almost 80 year expertise in constructing the reading brain in children ages birth to 8 with teachers across georgia and beyond. The rollins center for language & literacy synthesizes the research of the nation's leading brain development and literacy experts, and collaborates with staff at the school, to develop both onsite teacher training and coaching, as well as free online training through our cox campus website. Partnering with public and private organizations and with a reach of more than 10,000 teachers, the rollins center delivers effective language and literacy strategies used to transform young lives. The center is especially focused on training teachers of children whose families have experienced a generational lack of access to quality education, and the resulting illiteracy and poverty.
the school also has clinical programs that provide diagnostic, therapeutic and remediation services to both children and adults, including the following programs: audiology clinic (offers hearing services to adults, children, and infants); speech-language pathology clinic (provides evaluation and therapy for children and adults); occupational therapy clinic (provides therapy for children with sensory integration, handwriting, or fine/gross motor difficulties); learning lab (provides specialized individual or small group academic intervention for children struggling academically).
