Programs: Operation school bell - the operation school bell program provided new school clothing to 564 elementary school children from low income families. The children were given three complete school outfits at the assistance league glendale from a selection of polo shirts, long or short pants, skirts or jumpers for the girls, and five pairs of underwear and socks. The children were especially excited to receive a warm zip-up fleece jacket for the cold mornings on the school playground and were eager to open their own personal hygiene kit packed with a new comb, hair brush, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste. The children were also given a coupon to take home to their parents to redeem for a new pair of shoes. The last stop before leaving assistance league brought big smile as they were allowed to chose two books to take home to keep.
authors and illustrators - in this program, unique to assistance league glendale, 2,916 children in four elementary schools welcomed a children's book author or illustrator into their classroom for a very personal presentation. The presenters shared how they started writing or illustrating books and how their manuscripts were marked in red by editors. The children learned they aren't the only ones who have to rewrite their work to improve it. Often presenters started a story with the children, outlining the character, a problem to solve and then left the story unfinished for the students to finish in class. This fits well with the common core standards in schools. In addition to the classroom presentations schools were given copies of the author's books and a check for $1,000 to buy new books for the school library.
