My family will forever be grateful to Mending Kids for giving my daughter Nathalie Drew a second chance at life. She was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot in 2007 when she was just one year and three months. We came to know Mending Kids thru a friend with the help of Miss Menchu Sarmiento of the PAL Foundation.I and my daughter came to the US in October 2007 where she had her open heart surgery free of cost at UCLA a month after we arrived ( series of tests were made to make sure she was ready for the major operation). My daughter couldn't have made it without Mending Kids because my family couldn't afford the expenses. Now Nathalie is 14 years old and she is a Y8 student enjoying school and her friends.Mending Kids is about loving, caring and saving children especially the most underprivileged ones. Thank you so much for saving my daughter and to all other kids around the world.Mending Kids will forever be in our hearts.

Traveled the world (when one could do such a thing) as a volunteer with Mending Kids.
To see the life of a child saved is enough, but to know you had a small part in it...priceless.
Now our surgeons are holding worldwide symposiums, continuing to teach doctors and save lives virtually.
Mending Kids is also mending America. Donating masks, PPE and a ventilator to US hospitals and clinics.
Still mending, here and around the world.

What an amazing organization and spectacular group of doctors and support staff. The world is a better place because of their dedicated focus on healing those in need but without any access to the help they need.
Their additional focus on training doctors means long-term good that spreads around the world.
I can’t say enough about everyone involved. Outstanding human kindness.

Hands down, the best non-profit organization for helping kids needing surgery worldwide. The staff is dedicated and committed to educate would-be donors by taking them on missions to see the good work done by the volunteer doctors and nurses. They also offer missions to less-traveled, yet equally needy destinations in order to help as many kids as possible. These are kids who do not have access to specialized care in their home countries. There is truly no better organization I have had the privilege to work with.

Excellent and committed staff, efficient allocation of resources, and a commitment to go anywhere there is a child in need. One impressive aspect is that the staff coordinates surgical teams from all over the world to perform surgeries for kids all over the world. World-class surgeons! Also, MK focuses on training local surgeons so that MK's surgeons are no longer needed. It's pretty spectacular!

Mending Kids transformed the life of Victor and in the process made life more abundant for so many who were involved in this miraculous work. Victor was born with a birth defect that made life difficult for him and his family. He was a brilliant 6-year old when we first met him in Kamulu, Kenya. He was fluent in both English and Swahili, able to read, write, and speak in both languages. We learned soon after meeting him that due to his physical condition, he was not afforded the privilege of attending school beyond the pre-school level. Through Mending Kids, Victor's life was completely changed... for good. People from throughout the world, including Gene Simmons, Dr. Freedman and an incredibly skilled teams of doctors and nurses at Cedars-Sinai, came together to provide resources for complex and life-changing surgeries that gave Victor a new lease on life. Today, Victor is a vibrant teenager, successfully attending school, living a healthy life... one filled with hope and vision for a bright future. Mending Kids and its people use their amazing gifts and abilities to make life abundant for so many around the world. Their transformative work in Victor's life is nothing short of miraculous. The hundreds of people who came together to love on and provide for Victor through Mending Kids have been transformed as well... for good. I am so thankful for Mending Kids! Their work transforms life, infuses hope, strengthens love, and betters humanity. Such a powerful testament to the goodness in our world!

I wrote to mending kids few years ago about a baby in Africa who has a complicated heart situation. His family could not financially afford to have this baby get the proper treatment needed. Cristina , replied to my email to learn more about the family and their situation. After back and forth emails and Cristina’s follow up the baby went to India and got his surgery done. It may sound easy but this organization and their dedicated stuff saved a life . It’s not only words but it’s action taken that makes a huge difference on this young first time parents and their son. My time with Mending Kids has been very heart warming and giving. By giving I mean everyone involved with MK is for the Kids. All energy is spent on what is best for the children. I have volunteered with MK for 7 years helping wherever needed....stuffing envelopes, setting up for Gala's, Golf Adventures, Poker Night, Home Town Mission and even a yard sale. Everyone pitches in and does whatever is needed from sweeping floor's, unloading U-Haul's to the big clean up at the end of every event. At the end we are all tired, by have smiles on our faces because we know more children will be mended and go on to a better life. Please volunteer wherever your heart takes you.

As a volunteer I look for charities that help children and Mending Kids does that in BIG way. Children that may be cast away in some countries now have a chance to live a good life. MK reaches out in so many ways they are able to help more and more children. There is no better reward than to see a child smile, that once could not, or walk, or go out in public with their head held high. I am always looking for the next opportunity to help children and I have found it here.

We have been hosting children since 2005 with Mending Kids International. This is our absolute favorite organization to work with! Every person, whether employed or volunteer, gives 100% and then some. This foundation has become part of our family. There is so much love spread around and everyone at Mending Kids cares not only for the children they treat, but also for the parents, the host families and each other. Without Mending Kids, many of these children would not survive. What a miracle their parents have been given to have their children healthy in a situation where they could do nothing. Our family has gotten so much out of this foundation as well. It has helped teach our own children to be more compassionate towards others and not always think about themselves first. It is a gift to be able to help others in need. We have truly been blessed to work with such an amazing group of people at Mending Kids International!

7 years ago, I set foot in the Mending Kids family as a non-medical volunteer joining a team of surgeons from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center who were headed to China to operate on orphans with congenital malformations and give them a chance to being adopted into families. The experience not only was an epiphany for me, it gave me an opportunity to use my filmmaking skills to share this experience with others. I volunteered for 2 more years on subsequent missions to Guatemala, Christmas Island and Ethiopia (to name a few) before being hired as a communication specialist. Mending Kids not only gave me a window into the rest of the world and woke me up to needs of so many children who lack access to the care they need (including in the USA,) it supported me with in-the-field team management experience and added to my responsibilities from Mission Coordinating to running the department and to now being the Director of Global Outreach for Mending Kids. Having coordinated and traveled now on more than 40 missions and helped more than 2000 kids gain access to the surgeries they needed, I had no clue heading off on that first trip to China in 2011 that the path would lead me to this humbling adventure and amazing organization.

Alexandra Inoyame would probably be dead today were it not for the partnership of JAPI WITH Mending Kids. When one of our doctors, Dr. Edgard Fortune, saw this young 14 year old girl who was injured by the 2010 earthquakes in Haiti he had compassion for her. As a physician, he wanted to do anything in his power to help that family and especially that poor little girl. Dr. Edgard called JAPI USA and asked if there was anything that JAPI could do to help. The answer was yes “if there is anything any body and or organization can do JAPI can help”.
After JAPI made contact with Ms. Isabelle Fox through Mending Kids, a partnership to save lives in Haiti went in motion. In November 2016 Alexandra Inoyame received a $30K surgical gift from Mending Kids and was restored to her family. Before AFTER

This is a wonderfully worthwhile cause! I have learned so much in such a short time looking through the eyes of the Mending Kids team. Not only are they orchestrating surgical missions around the world benefitting children who would not otherwise receive any care, they also take the extra step of training local physicians and surgeons so that they are better prepared to give back within their own communities in the future. Perhaps most impressive to me was the insanely high percentage of donated dollars that go directly to the cause. I believe it was 95% last year! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY! Nobody does it better!

I have had the privilege of seeing first hand just how wonderful Mending Kids International is. From my first encounter with the foundation, I just knew that somehow, I had to be a part of it. The Home town mission was where I got to "dip my toe" and see just how thoughtful, organized, and dedicated this group is. I couldn't wait to go on my mission! I was lucky enough to accompany them to China and Mongolia and see the difference that MKI makes. Not only for the children and families, but for the medical personnel and for us, the volunteers. As corny as it sounds, my life was changed. I'm a wife, a mother, a hard worker...little did I know that this small role that I played in their truly LIFE SAVING mission, would save me.

I can only say the most outstanding things about MKI! I am a academic pediatric surgeon who has worked with MKI for several years. This group excels far beyond what most NGOs can do-they recognize high-impact ways to most help children in need, they link well with other organizations such as universities and local clinician to find common goals, and they are extremely cost-efficient with their donor dollars. They have immense foresight into gaps in global surgical care, and find creative ways to engage their donors with these innovative programs. GO MKI!

Mending Kids Changes Lives. Best events in LA from House of Blues , Wine Tastings, to pop up shopping. I have met the people who really do change the lives of whole families.
Many doctors that take the time to operate like Dr. Mac Moretz to those, who through events & the families that are healed by the hard work of all those who volunteer for Mending Kids. The Cusumano's hosting a child or Gene Simmons & Shannon Tweed Simmons & family, hosting a child & provided top notch entertainment to Dr Brad Hillstrom who tirelessly supported the House Of Blues event & the Deluca family giving donations through Malibu Guitar Festival to Dorothy Lucy who promotes Mending kids 24/7 all year long to make the wheels keep turning. But to those unnamed contributors & volenteers, & doctors that all end up at the desk of Marchelle Sellers, who without her efforts, their global leadership of transforming the children in need with the best surgical care, then empowering communities to create self-sustaining programs with care & love, it's Marchelle & her tireless staff of volunteers, make sure that 90 cents of every dollar, goes to the children. You want fun & good cause? It's Mending KIds.

Mending Kids International is a phenomenal organization that changes lives one surgery at a time. MKI is a nonprofit where the majority of donated money goes directly to the care of pediatric patients in underserved regions all over the world. The costs of delivering surgeries abroad are kept low through donated medical supplies, donated time from nurses, ancillary staff and physicians. MKI is an organized nonprofit that ensures that pediatric patients receive the same standard of care that kids would receive in the U.S.

I have performed surgeries with multiple charitable organizations over the years. MK is by far the best organized and efficient at managing the staff, materials and physician resources. Participating in domestic as well as international missions with MK has been fulfilling and also I know that the children are being followed up with the ongoing resources that have been assisted by MK do such. The organizational costs from each dollar donated is exceedingly low and I appreciate that!@

Mending Kids is an incredible organization providing life saving medical support, mostly surgeries, at home and abroad. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the inspiring people on the board of directors. They not only have their full hearts in the organization, but also make sure that it's well managed and that the profits are going where they should be....to the patients awaiting surgeries they need to live. I volunteer with Mending Kids as a Recovery Room/Pre-operative nurse on their trip to Port Au Prince, Haiti. Haiti and Mending Kids first stole my heart in 2012 and every year I look forward to returning. Each year I've worked with a team from Children's Hospital of Los Angeles (all of whom are actually my co-workers and colleagues). We work extremely well together and know our goal is to help as many children as physically possible. Mending Kids not only organizes the whole trip and communicates with the hospitals or communities to get surgical teams in place, but they provide the funding for surgical supplies, airfare, medications, translators, and so much more. Mending kids truly goes above and beyond to ensure that no child is left behind or forgotten. Their hope is to give every child a fighting chance at life and happiness. They do this with tremendous effort and determination -providing surgeries to children around the world, in the poorest countries, that lack basic resources, (let alone sufficient healthcare) and their success is astounding.

Those who work with Mending Kids are a group of wonderful human beings both in and out of country who give everything they can to children. I work in a private school in Central America where I have had the opportunity to witness their work first-hand. At school we are often approached by organizations who need are help. Most of the time it is for monetary donations only and our students often do not know the impact they have on the community. Mending Kids and their partners here at the children's hospital have changed that. Our families, staff and students have been encouraged to participate in all aspects of the experience. It has made an impact on them in such a way that they now want to continue to help this organization. Our students and families met the patients and their families and they actually saw the impact they helped make in the lives of these children and their parents.
I personally had the opportunity to share with some of the parents of these children undergoing life-saving surgery. The anguish on their faces as they explained the history of their children was heart wrenching. When these parents saw their children post op it looked as if the weight of the world had lifted and they could now see their children having a future. Wow!! Thank you Mending Kids for allowing us to be part of this experience. Best wishes to all of you!!!

All members of Mending Kids are passionate, compassionate, and dedicated about all children. We have had the blessing to work with this organization in a different capacity. I work for a private school in Central America. Usually when most non-profits need help many times all they need are funds. Our students rarely see what the money they raise actually goes for. It is difficult at times for students to truly grasp what needs there are in the community since they never really are exposed to them. Thanks to the members of Mending Kids in and out of country our students have been able to be active participants in many different ways. Our students and their parents have learned so much and want to help this program grow. It takes time by those of Mending Kids and their doctors both in and out of country to sit and explain everything to middle and high school kids; to show them what they are doing and who is benefiting. I know for a fact that our students have benefitted from this organization.
I had the opportunity to spend time with some of the parents of the children who were having surgery done. The desperation on their face as they spoke of their child's history was excruciating. When they saw their children post-op it was as if the weight of the world had been lifted from their souls. No matter what the future holds for them, they know their child's future will different now. Thank you Mending Kids and to everyone who works with you!!!!

As the former president of my local high school's Mending Kids International chapter, I believe that MKI's goals of helping patients ranging from common diseases to less well-known ones was a truly great way to not just expose high schoolers to the real life applications that medical missions could be administered and practiced, but also to get the community to take notice on issues that otherwise would not get much attention. Ms. Marchelle Sellers, with whom I have had the wonderful privilege to work with multiple times, truly has a visionary view of what it means to lead a nonprofit and to actively get the community involved in service events and also participate in drives and fundraisers. The experience I had with MKI inspired me to pursue an occupation in health services, as well as to spread the good news about this organization to family and friends throughout the country!

I've been a physician volunteer on approximately 15 international missions with Mending Kids, and MKI's antecedent, Healing the Children, over the last twenty or so years. In that time, the organization has changed from a mom (mostly just mom) and pop operation that survived only by the Grace of God, into a professionally administered non-profit (that still survives by the Grace of God, figuratively if not literally). Bigger, more efficient, better funded: but still trying to fix the world one kid at a time.
In all of those years, I've never had reason to question the motives, agenda, or intentions of the organization, no matter who was running it. It's always been all about the children.

As for me, many of the most enduring professional memories of my career have arisen out of my involvement with MKI: the simple gratitude of the families of the children we've cared for, kids who otherwise would have had no chance; X-ray rounds in the PICU, with the parents of the kids; party day at the end of a week of cardiac surgery, when the kids we've taken care of in years past come back to visit us--all grown up--at the social event of the season. Then there are the personal memories: wedding anniversaries spent in Guayaquil; a daughter deciding to pursue a nursing career after tagging along on a mission; witnessing the shared human experience, no matter what country you are in, of trying to do everything you can to protect, and perhaps save, your child.

And there are things, good and bad, that only people who were there would understand. Boris, who could now walk. Jorge of the Junga. Paula and the big white stuffy. Paola and the G-5. Miracles. Tragedies. And everything in between.

Through it all, the good and the bad, I've always known that the MKI people have felt it all with me: that, for them, it's always been a calling, an adventure, truly a part of the human experience. And that is what has made it so special. They really do care.

Mending Kids International works incredibly hard to provide children all around the world with the care they need. I began at Mending Kids 10 months ago as an intern through my Master in Science in Global Medicine program at USC Keck School of Medicine and as their current Program Assistant, I have been able to see all the great work the staff and volunteers do! They all work hard to ensure that the money donated to this organization is sent off to where it needs to go and to ensure that we can utilize it to its greatest potential by helping the greatest amount of children with high quality care wherever we travel to as an organization. By creating partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and hospitals, Mending Kids International is ensuring that the most vulnerable population of the world, children, receive the help they deserve.

Mending Kids International is an organization that really "walks the walk"! They operate on a very small staff (5 full time), yet have enormous impact on a global basis. Children are the first and foremost priority. They have provided over 1,000 free surgeries in over 54 countries (including the United States) and have not only significantly changed the lives of children, but have actually saved lives as well. They bring in medical experts for virtually any type of surgery needed from cardiac, orthopedic, reconstructive, general, urology, and much more! MKI also works on research, training, and prevention to assist communities in providing sustaining and long lasting results. We had the privilege of hosting a child through MKI for eight months. Not only was the medical technology he needed not available in his country, but his family had an annual income of less than $500 and could not have afforded any medical treatment regardless. The operations he received in the U.S. literally transformed this child's life. There were so many happy moments, like the first time he could fit a shoe on one of his feet and walk normally. The child we hosted was older, and he was able to appreciate the stark contrast between his previous life full of medical issues and his new healthy life full of promise. Along with the operation came maturity and new-found hope for the rest of his life. It is rare organization that can make this significant a difference in the lives of others.

There was a child in Ethiopia with blue lips and finger tips. She kept fainting in our arms. Two days later her father showed me a blue blanket and pointed to her lips. Then he picked up a pink blanket, pointed to her lips...and smiled. Our MKI team had gotten there just in time. This little girl was turning blue from lack of oxygen. Her heart had almost given out. But our cardiac team gave her a new chance at life. A day after surgery her lips were as pink as any lip gloss.
I was a volunteer on this mission. All I did was play with the kids. But the doctors and nurses volunteering with Mending Kids saved her life. And the lives of 28 other kids.
Mending Kids does this all over the world. Helpiing the sickest of the sick and the poorest of the poor.

I've sent MANY parents and doctors to Mending Kids International and they've literally saved their lives at a moment's notice - providing airfare for a girl with a brain tumor from Liberia, heart surgery for a group of critically-ill kids from Rwanda - so many stories - too many to even list here. The Saga of Selina

Today (23 October 2009) I visited Selina’s place. First I visited Selina’s mother. The house she lives in looked as haggard and rough as their careworn bodies. The hut is stuffed with cheap furniture. Selina’s mother became busy preparing my snacks. I wondered how they all live in such a meagre accommodation. Magrib Azan was going on so I stood to say my prayers. As the floor was unplastered and dusty she spread a sheet on the bed covered with torn bed sheet and oily old pillows. The fan almost touched my head. So I had to bend forward while praying. The percentage of poor practicing Muslim is very marginal. None of Salina’s family says their prayers. It seems poverty has taken them from their Lord. Or sometimes they think there is no God except what they do with their bare hands.

I imagined this is the very bed wherefrom Selina was pushed away when she one day came to visit her mother from her husband’s family. Selina was beaten mercilessly for slyly marrying Mulkul, a black complexioned lad of formidable built but of little education. From then on nightmares haunted her. Poverty of her husband took away her beauty and romance and friction between the two families aggravated her nightmares. Then as if to add insult to injury came Maya who was born with severe cleft on her face. Now let me tell the rest of the saga.

Selina, a beautiful black complexioned poor agile school going girl, fell in love with Mukul who comes of a butcher family. Mukul’s father used to buy goats from far flung village for slaughter in the Lapur market. Butchers are not held in esteem here in Bangladesh. So this angered Selina’s ambitious mother whose family is comparatively well off than Mukul’s. When Selina just entered the college, Selina’s beauty and education brought many proposals. Her parents had dream about her but she, they thought, shattered their hope by marrying Mukul slyly one day. This family feud invited anger to her from both families. She was in dire dilemma. When one day maltreatment and Mukul’s poverty pushed her to her mother’s family, Selina was pushed off the bed and mercilessly beaten by her own brother who owns a small shoe shop. But her unwavering love for Mulul and courage carried her through. But when Maya was born it seemed to her that she came to growl at her with her cleft face. People told her to kill the baby to save the family from a bad name and the child from lifelong social stigma. But can a mother kill her own child? Can a golden soul nurture hatred for a child only for her disability?

Days went on and Maya remained hung from the neck of Selina and her family like a dead albatross. Albatross in ‘The Ancient Mariner’ brought good luck to the sailors but the ancient Mariner killed it one day. Initially, other crew members denounced the killing but when they saw that things got better in spite of the crime they accepted the killing positively. Thus they acquiesced to the crime and were killed by an angel. The same thing happened in the case of Maya. Only difference is Maya’s haters are still alive. When Maya’s presence in the shoe shop helped develop the business, only then Selina’s brother accepted Maya and Selina’s marriage to Mukul. Most of the people thus are guided by expediency rather than principle.

Selina took her daughter here and there. None could help them till a medical team from Mendingkids Hospital in Los Angeles came to Dhaka. The team saw Maya, took her photograph and later sent some forms to be filled in and sent to them. It seemed Selina and Mukul saw light at the end of the tunnel. I visited Selina’s room. The room is clear of furniture that were sold to obtain money for passport and visa. Only the unplastered brick walls are decorated with embroidered pictures by Selina. A picture of a female face written with Rudyard Kipling’s famous line-‘the female of the species is more deadly than the male’ struck me with a paradox. How can it be? Is Selina deadly? Then I came to a conclusion that yes, Selina is deadly resolute to withstand all odds for her daughter and her husband. I woke up from my confusion but it seemed I heard a forlorn cry in there as Selina’s touch is on the wall but the reality is Selina is now in Mendingkids, Los Angeles, America with Maya. I don’t know whether I’m happy or sad. Selina will return with mended Maya to the jaw of poverty again. Are their any souls there to protect this flower from scorching poverty?

I have spent two semesters as an unpaid intern for Mending Kids International. What I find amazing is the dedication of this small staff and their true love for the children they help and their families. Mending Kids International goes into countries where children have either no physical access to live saving surgeries that we take for granted in the United States or where they are turned away because they do not have the money to pay for the surgeries. I have seen them work tirelessly to identify children in need and to collaborate with organizations that exist in the areas where they work to improve self-sustainability. I am proud to be involved with this organization.
