I have been in volunteer roles all of my adult life. I have served in numerous organizations, Boards, and committees. With that background I can confidently say that Ascencia is one of the most well run organizations I been affiliated with over the years. From the Executive Director, permeating throughout the entire organization, the sense of Mission is first and foremost. More, the entire Board of Directors and volunteers embrace the 'call to action' for all of the Ascencia clients. The level of professionalism and accountability are paramount. Donors, volunteers, and staff are regularly shown a strong sense of appreciation. Ascencia deserves the accolades of many.

My wife and I have been proud donors for the past couple of years. Over that time we have learned the amazing and critical work that Ascencia is doing in our area. Just recently I have had the privilege of joining the Board of Directors. By becoming more involved I get to see first hand just how well run this organization really is. I have got to interact with The Executive Director and senior staff - they "really get it." They are passionate and gifted at what they do. I admire the fact that there is a strategic plan that aims at growth as the old phase goes "you're either growing or dying." As the need grows so does the vision.

Ascencia is one big FAMILY - a team of staff & volunteers working together for the clients.
As a volunteer member of the Las Candelas,a philanthropic organization, participating as part of Ascenscia"s Guest Chef Program - teamwork is evident as we are warmly welcomed by a staff member who is also available to help us with any needs we have in preparing & presenting food for grateful clients. It is heartwarming to accept appreciation from both client and staff. Being able to sit after dinner and talk with clients, especially the children, is time I cherish during my Guest Chef volunteer work. Ascencia Directors Laura and Camille are at the helm of a well-run organization. They have made Ascencia the success it is, and I so appreciate their work. I proudly serve a Ascencia volunteer and donor.

Ascensia helped me in a great time of need when I found myself living in my car after leaving an unbearable situation where I was living.
They gave me safe and warm shelter, showers, food, good food! They allowed me to regain my dignity. They gave me counseling and peer support, financial knowledge, and fellowship. Thanks to as Ascensia I have permanent and affordable housing.
Thank you Ascencia for helping so many people in need!

I needed to leave domestic violence and had no money to rent another apartment. I decided to sleep in my car. I did this for a long time. I found Ascencia and was provided shelter, food, counseling, and general support. Ascencia helped me find an affordable apartment and I've been 2 years living on my own in an apartment I can afford. Thank you Ascencia for helping to change and improve my life!
I now support helping people experiencing homelessness as an honored member of the Board of Directors at Ascencia.

I have been on Ascencia's board of directors for approximately two years. During this time I have witnessed Ascencia help people, including children, get off the streets and transition them to permanent housing. This is a non-profit that provides tangible results, not just words about what it wants to accomplish. You would be quite moved if you heard the stories I have heard from people who have been helped by Ascencia. I am sure people are skeptical about homeless non-profits, but I can say from personal experience, Ascencia is truly making a difference in people's lives here in Los Angeles County.

The services Ascencia offers go above and beyond what I have heard other homeless nonprofits do. When I read their announcements and hear about things they are doing in their community and beyond, it feels real. They aren't just 'saying' things to get donations, they are 'doing' the work to help and service people no matter what their background is. Their employees and volunteers really seem to enjoy what they are doing to make a difference! When you give, you see and feel results, not that you are adding to someone's paycheck. Most of the stories aren't just that someone was helped and they move on, you see how their lives have been changed after being on the streets for so long, and that the help isn't going away!

I love their Christmas gift program because you are able to pick a family(s) and not just give them toys or random household goods, but something they need, and more importantly almost, something they want. Everyone deserves to be happy and get something that really puts a smile on their face! I would love to see them extend that to more times a year. Maybe on birthdays or anniversaries of when they joined the program. I also love their Amazon Wish List because you know you are giving to someone needs and not just money to help a program.

More communities need to model the success Ascencia has had to really make that difference in Los Angeles County and beyond. The money and items they get really go back to the community as do the services the people need for mental health, education, work, and so much more.

I was the Co-President of the Board of Directors for 5 years of an effective and successful nonprofit in San Francisco serving the children in 5 homeless shelters. After moving to Glendale I made a large donation action of goods Ascentia could you use that were gratefully recieved. I asked to meet the Exececutive Director, Laura Duncan, to learn more about their mission and operations. I couldn’t have been more impressed with both and especially Laura Duncan. Having worked so closely with many shelters in San Francisco I was very familiar with their programs, operations and successes. I felt Ascencia was exceptional relative to those I knew so well in San Francisco. It is so well run and staffed with dedicated and knowledgeable individuals who are so pleasant to deal with. I have participated in their adopt a family Christmas program every year since moving to the area. It is extremely well organized and provides hundreds of gifts that families have asked for that are needed and desired for the children. Ascentia is resource and shelter program that maximizes the gifts, donations or volunteers to the greatest extent possible to meet their varried clients many needs and give the kind of effective, life changing support to rebuild lives.

As a volunteer grant writer for Ascencia, I saw numerous, detailed examples of extraordinary success. Ascencia houses their clients experiencing homelessness and, more importantly, keeps them housed at close to 100%. This is a testimony to their comprehensive approach that includes vigorous outreach; emergency, short term and long term placement; plus a wide range of supportive services that help ensure their clients are able to remain housed. While they are headquartered in Glendale, California, a number of nearby jurisdictions utilize them (for example, West Hollywood, and East Hollywood). Ascencia's mission is “Lifting people out of homelessness one person, one family at a time," and no one does it better.

I have been supporting Ascencia with a monthly donation for many years. I belong to a woman’s club and they went to Ascencia to prepare a meal for the people staying there. This is also a good way to help. Get some people together and schedule a meal plan. They do such good work at Ascencia to help those in need.

I started volunteering at Ascencia as a Guest Chef along with my two grandsons eight years ago when they were both in high school and continue to do so today. Interacting with the clients has been a wonderful experience for my entire family. Now my three youngest grandchildren are also involved making sack lunches and buying gifts for families at the holidays. One of the features I enjoy the most about Ascencia is that there are so many different opportunities to become involved. When I could no longer do dinner for the clients, the staff helped me find a way to switch to lunches and then to breakfasts in order to meet my time constraints. I was able to put my sewing skills to use during the pandemic by making masks and also fleece blankets for the children. There is always a way to help the clients no matter how limited your time or resources are. The staff is fabulous and the clients are wonderful.

My love for Ascencia and their clients began the first time my grandsons and I volunteered as Guest Chefs in 2016, and that love has only grown over the years. What began as an opportunity for my grandson's to earn service hours for Providence High School, has developed into a passion for being a part of an organization that is making a meaningful change in the lives of others. Through the years several other family members have become Ascencia supporters either as guest chefs or donors, and of course those grandsons, who are now in their 20s, continue to help as much as possible. The opportunity to interact with Ascencia clients and learn more about them--their struggles and their triumphs--is what makes Ascencia a standout nonprofit in my eyes. I still think about the client who was deaf, the family with four adorable young children, the older woman who would ask for a plate to give to her adult son later, and so many others. I am confident not only has Ascencia improved their lives but I know it has improved mine.

We have partnered with Ascencia and their guest chef program for years! We are so appreciative of everything Ascencia does for the homeless population in our community. It’s not just a shelter, it’s a hand up to get out of the cycle of homelessness and poverty. I have witnessed how each resident is treated with respect and dignity. And the children who are there are thriving as well. Throughout the years, I have seen families come and go, and transition to their own apartments or homes. We are blessed to have such a great nonprofit as Ascencia in our community.

Our church has been participating in the "guest chef" program at Ascencia for many years, and has also occasionally provided "move-in" baskets for clients moving into permanent housing, and holiday gifts for families. I am so impressed with all of the things that Ascencia does including street outreach, and help with finding employment and housing, to name just a few! I love reading the success stories in their newsletter. My husband and I donate on a regular basis to this extremely worthy local gem.

I started volunteering for Ascencia almost 8 years ago. Their mission, lifting people up out of homelessness, is so inspiring and uplifting. Over the years I have seen many of their success stories, placing homeless people into jobs and housing, working with them to make sure they have the resources necessary for them to be successful. I have seen the tremendous support of Ascencia from influential people in the community. I may not have the financial means to be of great support to them, but I can certainly give my time.

When I came in last Tuesday, I went to the kitchen to get the guest chef registrations lists. While I was there a young man came up to me and asked me if he could have a pair of the plastic gloves on the table. We chatted for a minute. He was so grateful for such a simple thing, and so kind and pleasant. It made me feel proud to be a part of the organization.

I cannot say enough about the hardworking staff that runs this facility. There have been many staffing changes over the past 8 years, but every time someone else is hired, they always show focus, empathy, and a true desire to help their fellow man.

About five years ago I learned about Ascencia. I decided to volunteer my time and was amazed by the incredible work they do for people suffering on the streets. I knew that I would immediately want to support them financially. It's a no brainer. They literally go out every day in vans and go directly to the epicenter of matter, encampments, under bridges, literally wherever their case managers need to go to provide help to our unhoused neighbors. I love supporting Ascencia--they are literally saving lives every day, with proven 17 yearlong track record of success. The best investment ever.

Ascencia gives our affected unhoused neighbors hope and a brighter future. They provide temporary housing while addressing the root cause of those affected and offers help be it joblessness, mental and physical health etc. They do not just provide a meal and a bed. The success rate of not returning to homelessness within one year after Ascencia's intervention is over 95 percent. They also provide financial classes to all it's residents to help them through a difficult period. Knowing all that, and it's just a fraction of the support they offer, why would I not support this great organization?

Ascencia is a place for those people that want support and care but want to get back their feet. The staff and volunteers at Ascencia are very supportive of these goals and work individually with each person to restore their smiles and humanity. They connect with each person to learn about each individual need and work together to plan a path to achieve these goals. I volunteer my time for guest chef and hair stylist. I have witnessed the change in a person who begins to believe in himself through the help and kindness of the volunteers and staff. I find my time at Ascencia very rewarding and grounding. I get to see everyone without ego or attitude. I get to see the true human spirit come through those people we are able to help with either a hot meal or a nice haircut.

Our group has been volunteering at Ascencia for 5 years now. During this time period, we have seen so many individuals and families it has helped, in the hundreds perhaps even in the thousands. It is a great non-profit because it continuously strives to improve the living conditions of the clients in the facility. It moved to a new building 2 years ago to better accommodate the needs of the residents providing better sleeping quarters, cleaner surroundings, more bathrooms, state of the art kitchen where us "Guest Chefs" enjoy preparing meals, computers for job search. There's even a room where children get tutored and study. Even pets of the homeless clients are welcome, guide dogs and even cats. All in a safe, secure environment. This is one of the best managed if not the best shelter I have seen and am happy to be a part of. - A Blanco

When I first came to Ascencia I was immediately impressed by the setup of the shelter. It was very organized and yet felt homely which allows for the individual to interact with fellow human beings. I noticed when one becomes homeless there is isolation as some people would try to avoid them in the streets. The homely environment allows them to get that feel again of getting back into society. The clients are treated with respect and and compassion and yet given responsibilities. Each one is assigned a task to help clean and maintain orderliness in the facility (example: cleaning of the kitchen after meals, cleaning of the bathrooms and the general area). The staff are very professional and friendly. I believe Ascencia is a model shelter. They have in place a program that not only provides the daily needs of the individual: food, shelter, medical attention but also helps them obtain the government assistance they are entitled to, and eventually help find low cost housing. It also looks forward to get them settled back and be able to sustain themselves on a long term basis. At the same time, the clients are checked on regularly to ensure their well-being. Ascencia helps give back the dignity that one may have lost during one’s ordeal into homelessness. As one of the guest chefs, I feel honored to be part of such a great team and hope to be able to assist in the many more months, years ahead.

I have worked as a volunteer for Ascencia for several years.

In that time I have had the opportunity to get to know the staff and the residents there. Ascencia is unique as it is a no nonsense facility that stresses to the residents from day one that they are at the facility as a way station to help them help themselves. The Ascencia staff does all it can to help these people at every turn to eventually be able to re integrate themselves back into the community.

The Ascencia staff welcomes all peoples from all walks of life with and without families. All of these people are part of the dynamic that make Ascencia the go-to place for those people that are ready and willing to get back into the community who need a jumping off place to help them get their feet on the ground.

The facility is well run, clean, lean and efficient. No matter when you go there you will find everything clean and tidy. The staff works tirelessly to work with the residents, and they take a real interest in helping them get back on track.

The volunteers I have worked with are all top rate and just as dedicated to the facility as the staff there. When we serve the residents we actually sit with them and get to know them as people. Our greatest joy is when we have a resident tell us that they will be moving on to their own place in the next couple of days.

Please note that this is one of the finest facilities I have had the pleasure to work with!

I have been working as one of the Guest Chefs for Ascencia for several years now. The meals we plan and prepare for the residents are engineered with the three major components in mind. The first component is that the food is nutritious as well as healthy for all. We carefully select the menu items to achieve a balanced meal that will include as many of the food groups as possible. This is especially important as there are many children at the shelter. The second component is that we prepare as much of the food fresh at the shelter as possible. When that is not practical, we will bring the items and finish them off at the shelter, all with the aim of providing a fresh, hot meal. The third component is that we try and make the meal experience as enjoyable to all as possible. We chat with the residents, sit down with them to share the meal, and are always ready to listen to their stories. I know that in the time that we have been doing the meals that we have touched dozens of lives. When one is in need it is usually the little things that can make a rough day a bit brighter. I truly feel that we are instrumental in providing that ray of light for the residents on the days we are there.

I was in the Ascencia program 2005-2007. Back then it was PATH Achieve. Same individuals, same love, devotion and care. I still stay connected and will forever be grateful to all of them. They still care about me today as a matter of fact and it has been 6 years since I haven't needed their help. I love them and they saved my life back in 2005. I had just gone through a 6-month recovery and once that ended I had no place to go and was homeless. Ascencia took me in and not only gave me a place to sleep, food to eat, but offered counseling to make sure I was doing okay. They had someone help me put my resume together as well. I never thought when ending up in a homeless shelter that an agency such as this one could show me so much love, care, and concern. I will always help them if they ever need it and will never forget them. Ascencia is not just a shelter, but much much more. It gives individuals a chance to get their life back.

Ascencia is a unique organization representing a great public and private partnership to tackle homelessness in the greater Glendale area. As a local business in the Glendale area for more than 30 years, we love our community and want to give something back to them. Ascencia provides us the opportunity to fulfill this goal. In my more than seven years of involvement with the Ascencia board, I have seen numerous good hearted board members working extremely hard for the organization, not for their own glory nor benefit, but to do something for the poor and needy who are not as fortunate as they are. The hardworking and capable staffs at Ascencia did an excellent job there. Ascencia is a gift from heaven to help the people in need.

As a donor and in full disclosure, a member of the staff at Ascencia, I am proud to say that I work with an exceptionally committed group of professionals who give 100% every day for our clients. I've seen case managers work past their shift to make sure the homeless family or adult who walks in off the streets, after having been declined shelter at so many other places, finds a safe shelter bed immediately. I've been touched by the work ethic of residents in our shelter who have worked all day at their jobs and then gratefully returned to the shelter to help clean up after 39 other residents in an effort to keep our shelter maintained. And our Executive Director is not only a passionate leader with integrity and a comprehensive knowledge of the issues around homelessness but she's also a fierce advocate for our clients and staff. Before coming to Ascencia, I can say that I never interacted with a homeless individual nor have I took the time to have a conversation with them. But after spending some time here as an intern for a little over a month now, I can surely say that any perception one might have about homelessness will change once you enter these doors. Ascencia is like a family. A team consisting of compassionate staff, volunteers, and community members. Ascencia treats clients like family through their constant efforts to make sure they get what they need, such as medical attention, clothes, food, showers, or sometimes even someone to talk to. Their dedication to homelessness proves to be one of a kind. In the past month that I have been here, I have seen a great deal of clients come and leave. The best feeling of joy for Ascencia is when they are able to see clients leave toward the start of their new lives and new homes. As one of the volunteers/interns, I am honored to be part of such a great organization. My experience at Ascencia has been one of the most rewarding and growing experiences I have ever had. The work I've done is what I would call truly meaningful work. And the experiences/conversations I had with clients is life changing. I am more than glad to dedicate time toward assisting them in their efforts and their eventual successes.

when icme to ascencia (then Path Achieve) ihad been homeless for six months after a year struggle to stay in my apartment. I was sleeping nights in a friends car and during my days i was busy trying to hold together my tattered life. I felt like i was evaporating into thin air and that i would soon betotally gone.I came to ascencia where i became a esident in their shelter. It was the most comfortablebed I'd ever slept in and finally had a meal a day i could count on. The staff was kind and compassionate in their treatment of me. in the years i'vebeen coming to ascencia i've found the staffmembers to be dedicated and sincerely caring in their treatment of their clients. after being here a resident for 6 months an opening came in their shelter plus care program and i was blessed by being accepted in that program. a few weeks lateri moved into mynew apartment and have been "homed" ever since. Which is 5 years and 6 months at this time.. as the tijme has gone by people have gonea and new people have come. I have been sad to see friends leave but each new person has brought their own strenghts and ways of caring for which i am grateful. I have faced some challenges in the past few years but each time ascencia has always stood by my side and helped me. I hope in the years ahead theyh will continue to be there. I wishiwere more eloquentin my singing of my praises of ascencia! i have never met such agroup of dedicated and caring people in my life.

In my profession I do get to observe both the financial and operational efficiencies of an organization. Also, I have learned through experience that the strength of indiviudals responsible for govering, as well as, managing the organization is vital to its success and continuance. I have had the privledge of visiting Ascenita's location, speak with indiviudals responsible for managing and directing the organization. It was a pleasure to find an organziation that has done as much as it has with its resources and impressed with those you have been instrumental carrying out its goals and objectives.

I have had the pleasure of working with others to make dinner for the residents of Ascencia on a few occassions. Our group makes Sunday dinner when there is a 5'th Sunday in the month. I have to admit I joined this group of people to "do good" as I have had so many blessings in my lifetime. I thought I'd be able to share with the residents of Ascencia my limited cooking skills and maybe a smile or two. I thought I'd emerge afterwards saddened by the residents and their conditions. How very wrong I was. I came away with a big smile. Ascencia brings hope as well as shelter and food to the families and individuals staying with them. The children aren't downtrodden, they're loved and cared for. I was especially taken by all the prayers people said at dinnertime, thanking God for our presence there with them that evening. I am humbled and grateful that my friend invited me.

I grew up with my grandmother promising her I would take care of her. Promising that the man I marry would do the same. Still living with my grandmother, I married the perfect man and we had our first child. 1 year later my grandmother was diagnoised with breast cancer and I became pregnant with my 2nd child. 1 year after that my grandmother passed away. My husband and I used every penny to visit, take care, and pay for my grandmothers needs. Unfortuantely we ended up homeless. Thanks to ASCENCIA, we were able to provide the shelter we needed for our children and in two months we moved into our own apartment. Today we are in a 2 bedroom 2 bath 5 minutes away from our work. Life couldn't have turned out any better!

I can not put into words how much Path Achieve has helped me, they gave me a hand up...not a had out. While in there service I was able to clear up many problems I had. Housing is one of the bigest problems i faced when i finnished a rehab program, they opened there doors to me.
The shelter is clean well managed. The staff is superior to any I have worked with in the past.

They Care, Thank you PATH

My experience with PATH Achieve Glendale has led me to recognize them as an exceptional organization. I believe the most valuable qualities of the organization is that they cater to the safety and development of families and promote the livelihood of children. PATH Achieve Glendale is a valuable resource with a caring staff. PATH Achieve Glendale provides nutritional food, shelter, housing and a foundation towards self-sufficiency. Its organization expedites tangible items daily which includes: toiletries, clothing, blankets, diapers, and other necessary items that many take for granted. PATH Achieve Glendale is a non-for-profit organization that helps and supports anyone that expresses and demonstrates determination and a vision to their pathway to success. I applaud them.

I was a client of PATH Achieve in 2005, where I resided for (3) months. During my time at the facility I received counseling, housing, and a since of peace. I was never made to feel as if I was beneath anyone, and that I did not matter in this world. The staff were respectful, and caring, and I never felt alone. I feel that it was meant for me to go through that experience in order for me to have accomplished the one goal I had, and that was to go back to school, and graduate. I just graduated (2) months ago. Thank you for all of your help and guidance. Angela Lloyd

PATH Achieve Glendale is an outstanding program reaching out to homeless families in the Glendale area. After taking a tour a few years ago, I was really impressed. When Natalie Profant-Komuro then went to PATH Achieve, I knew that the program would be able to add even more services to truly make a difference for the homeless families and individuals who are staying in the emergency shelter. Natalie was the original program director for Beyond Shelter's "Housing First" Program - she is someone with a true lifelong commitment to helping homeless families and individuals. PATH Achieve doesn't just work with "easy" situations with quick solutions. They are one of the few organizations able to provide emergency shelter and other services to pregnant mothers and single fathers. It is a great organization with true community support.
