Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Angel’s Rest’s mission is to provide solutions to the immediate needs of unwanted animals who have no place to go other than a kill-shelter to face euthanization, die alone in the streets or die abandoned at the end of a chain. Our goal is to take animals out of situations where they would be facing imminent danger and provide them with a comfortable place to spend the remainder of their lives, no matter how long it maybe.

I felt so strongly about the mission of ARAS after having been served by them that I joined the board. The care and compassion they show for the animals and their human partners is amazing. I am proud of what we do, how we do it and why we do it. ARAS makes a difference. I encourage people to support them. I will be forever in their debt for allowing me to care for Emma in my home, her forever home. I know I made a difference for her and am comforted by our special bond in her last months. She forever changed me and I will always love her, and ARAS for making it possible!

As a single senior that recently lost his six year old K-9 to aggressive Lymphoma, I vowed to never get close to another animal. A visit to Angel's Rest changed that. When Emma, an older heart worm survivor that was found abandoned, looked into my eyes, I knew that we needed each other. I tell friends that she is not a perfect dog, but she is the perfect dog for me. Angel's Rest transforms lives for the better, for the animal and the human. A+ rating for their program and follow-up support.

I adopted Bailey, an 11 year old, blind, Maltese mix from Angel's Rest a couple of months ago. She stole my heart the first time I saw her. I am so grateful to Angel's Rest, because without them doing what they do best, she probably would not have had a chance. I don't know what her previous life was like, but she now has the opportunity to live out the rest of her life much loved, with the best possible care that every companion animal should have. All she wants is love and that is something that is so easy to provide (in abundance). My favorite saying is you can't buy love, but you can rescue it. Thank you Angels Rest for giving me the opportunity to love this precious little soul.

Angels Rest is a wonderful non-profit animal shelter which gives a second chance to dogs and cats who need a little (sometimes a lot) more tender, loving care than a county shelter and most other rescues would be able to provide, who would otherwise fall through the cracks. Excellent vet care is provided to those who need it. Some animals, either due to age or disease, are provided a loving, comfortable place (hospice) to live out the rest of their days if they are unable to be adopted out. They give up on no dog or cat.

The Elder Paws Program at Angels Rest is a fantastic program which matches dogs and cats with Seniors, Veterans, Disabled and the Homeless enriching the lives of both the person and the animal. This is such a wonderful program because Angels Rest enables people to have a pet who otherwise would not be able to care for one on their own. A win-win for both the person and the new pet.

The staff which works at the shelter truly loves the animals and takes wonderful care of all of them. This is a wonderful place to find the next fur baby for your family.

Last Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to adopt a rescue pup from Angel’s Rest. Our little Daisy is the sweetest, most loving little pup — and without Angel’s Rest stepping in to bring her to Ohio from Florida, she would’ve never been added to our family. Thank you!

My name is Kathleen Mahoney. I have participated in animal rescue for many years. Although I have focused on saving ex-racing greyhounds, I try to help as many other dogs and animals as possible through networking and donations.

I have had 19 dogs in my life, which is largely the result of adopting seniors. And so, Angel's Rest has greatly interested me. In my opinion, ARAS is one of the best sanctuaries/rescues that I have encountered. The leadership, the staff, the commitment to detail, and the executuion of planning are all exemplary.

I am currently sponsoring three dogs in the care of ARAS: Leigh, Matilda, and Koda. Leigh has seizures, Matilda had/has tumors, and Koda is paralyzed. These dogs would have no chance without Perla. Instead they are thriving under Perla's steady loving care.

We are so happy we met the great people at Angel’s Rest. We brought home a beautiful Neapolitan Mastiff, Harvey, to join our family. He was mostly considered unadoptable, but fell in love with us as we did with him. He changed our lives for the better. Angel’s Rest continued to help us as we helped Harvey enjoy his final years with his new family. They truly care about every animal.

There are many honorable "missions" that we can become involved in. None more fitting than to protect and provide for our loved ones and pets. They deserve our very best, and in return they give us their all. Please offer your support to "Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary" in whatever way you can. Ray Miller, Jr.

The rescue I work with have had a difficult time placing a dog with a bite history. He was returned from foster care to our rescue but due to having resident dogs and full time jobs we were unable to spend the time working with him and the isolation was making him become more aggressive and resource guard. We had contacted several sanctuaries and some were downright nasty about the situation. We were out of options and the owners who surrendered him were prepared to have him euthanized in a park setting. I found ARAS by accident looking for a form to surrender him back to his owners and this was a sign from God because they never came up in all my searches for sanctuary. They're in Ohio also, about 2.5 hours from here. I told the former owners who were headed down. He was skeptical, but once he spoke with them, they decided to cancel the euthanization, pay the fee, and get Captain to a safe place where he has a second chance at life. After he left, he said he slept well that night knowing that Captain was in a good place. We were given such a hard time by other "sanctuaries" which seemed to only take in dogs that were adoptable otherwise. ARAS is a TRUE sanctuary. They are responsive and can do what no other place in the nation I have found could do. I was trying to sell Captain to the other sanctuaries and yet the former owner said no matter what he said to ARAS about his fear he can't be rehabilitated, they were not phased at all. They deal with much larger dogs with aggression and severe biting histories. I will be forever in their debt for the work that they do. Captain's birthday is tomorrow, and he could be dead now, and ARAS gave Captain a new life. THANK YOU. Nicole

We had a very swift diagnosis of terminal cancer that had spread through out my mom's body. She had a sweet little dog named Abby that we needed to find a home for. Unfortunately me and my sister both have cats and Abby is a one person dog. I have been rescuing cats for many years and have three with severe medical conditions or physical deformities with one being blind with heart problems and CRF. I loved Abby and wanted so much to take her but it was out of the question. I called them in a desperate panic and through their forever program I was able to place her at Angels Rest. My mother didn't last 3 weeks after her diagnosis but I know she was comforted knowing her beloved companion was safe and would be well looked after. Thank you for helping to make my mom;s passing a little bit easier for her. I keep a photo of Abby in my studio on my work table and still get chocked up remembering how upset she was when I took her to Angels Rest. But with their help she has settled in and has a new chance for a forever home. If they have helped you with a pet I urge you to make a provision in your Will that will allow them to continue the amazing work that they do. When we were in crisis they were there for us. Beth E.

A Sanctuary. Fortunately, I was able to work with this cat and she calmed down enough for me to keep her. But I never forgot their unconditional kindness towards my cat and towards me. -- Nancy K.S.

My sister Perla Kinne founded Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary after a long life working as an engineer. She has devoted her existence to making sure that the animals that are lucky enough to enter her facility have a great life despite their issues (physical, emotional or behavioral). One such example is Roxie, a 12-year-old dog that, due to tragic circumstances, found herself homeless. She now lives in sunny South Florida with her sister ChooChoo and is enjoying her retirement.

Angel's Rest's main limitations are funding and space. If she could have more of both, there would be a lot more animals saved.

We have always adopted rescues. After visiting Angels Rest, I was in total admiration of their commitment to save those dogs and cats that would potentially e considered “unadoptable”. They are truly saving lives. Elder Paws is ingenious program. To connect homeless pets with those who truly need companionship but may not have financial resources for pet.
I am now the proud foster mama of an angels Rest dog.

Angels Rest rescues those pets that would have been euthanized due to age or medical conditions. What a savior to these loving beings!

Angel's Rest holds a unique place in my heart and in the community for the work they do with senior animals. My husband and I make it a mission to adopt seniors into our household, and it's wonderful to have a strong, committed partner like Angel's Rest as part of the movement to bring happiness and security to elder pets. Elder Paws is a brilliant program!

My experience with Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary has been excellent.

They are very good and kind to the animals they care for. They are good to the visitors, also.

Due to their kindness and generosity, I have founded a group of local authors named The Roaming Writers of Cincinnati.

Our writers have been working with Angels Rest for the last few years. The Roaming Writers donate the profit from our book sales to the Angels Rest.

In addition, to working with Angel’s Rest, we have also worked with The Animal Rescue Fund of Amelia. We are hoping to raise funds for The Peppermint Pig of Cincinnati in the future.

Puppies and kittens are so adorable, however, "less adoptable" pets need love too! Some are older, have special needs, or are simply the "wrong" breed or color. At ARAS, every furry creature matters. These less adoptable dogs and cats get a chance to live the rest of their days in comfort in the hands of the most caring people I have the pleasure to know. Perla Medina-Kinne and her incredible staff of compassionate pet lovers, are the angels on this earth to these unfortunate fur babies. Without their passion for keeping these beautiful dogs and cats alive and giving them the fulfillment they crave to be loved, there would be so many out there without the chance to live their last days (or years) in total happiness. In my heart, I know that ARAS is the most incredible sanctuary in the entire United States and I am so proud of all of them. Thank you ARAS for being there for these precious babies and keep up the GREAT work you do!

As the Founder and President of Angel's Rest, I am in awe of the dedication our staff displays towards the saving on "unwanted" animals. While setting up an animal hospice was my dream, no organization of this type survives without the support of dedicated individuals who believe in your mission as much as I do. Running a hospice facility for animals is not an easy thing as we face end-of-life issues often, if not daily. Furthermore, when you introduce running a thrift store to raise funds and animals with bite histories who may never get adopted, the commitment must be there in order to enrich these animals lives to a point where they are not just surviving, but thriving. Compassion fatigue is a very real thing in this business, but there is incredible support among the staff which is crucial.

I am extremely proud of Angel's Rest, its staff and the accomplishments it has achieved in the 8+ years we've been in existence.

Because of this level of commitment and dedication, this year Angel's Rest will embark on a new program where we will try to bridge the gap between Senior or homebound citizens and homeless pets.

I have been involved with Angel's Rest as a volunteer since it's early days operating out of New Richmond, Ohio, prior to their move to their facility in Amelia, Ohio. I have fostered several animals during that time, including both cats and dogs, which have brought great joy to my life. I can attest to the fact that this organization and the people involved in its day-to-day operation are second to none when it comes to putting the animals' best interests before anything else.

I have witnessed first-hand the struggles they have endured, including financially, because once they have committed to bring an animal through their doors, they will never give up on doing whatever it takes to give that animal the best life it can have.

There are many fine rescues out there, but I have not come across another one that takes in the kinds of animals that Angel's Rest does. Angel's Rest will take an animal even if it is considered by all others to be "unadoptable" due to any number of reasons, such as bite history, chronic illness, geriatric condition, or whatever the excuse may be and will give that animal just as much opportunity to live a full life as any other "adoptable" animal.

Many of the animals that people have considered unadoptable end up being adopted, even if after several years at Angel's Rest, and live a happy life as a valued member of a family. Some animals live the entire remainder of their lives at Angel's Rest.

Angel's Rest will never give up on an animal for any reason. That is one of the main factors that sets this organization apart and the main reason that I will always be a supporter of this organization.

While at the Angels Rest Thrift Store a mother cat and her kittens were dropped off. We instantly took to the smallest of the group. At first glance he looked like he had some health issues. At the vet it was suspected that he had fluid or cysts on his brain. We decided we wanted to give him a good home for however long he may have. Bojangles was the name we had decided for him. He had a clouded eye which cleared up. When he was a kitten he had tremors when he slept but now that he has grown they stopped. From when he took him home at almost 2 lbs, he has grown now to 5 lbs and is a bundle of energy. He loves to sleep on our laps and pillows with us, and loves to play in the bathtub. We are thankful to have him and happy he is part of our family.

I first met Charlie while bringing my son in to volunteer for Angel's Rest. Charlie had come to Angel's Rest because of behavior issues. He was an overweight senior dog. The amazing folks at Angel's Rest did such an incredible job with Charlie. They took quick action to start by getting the extra weight off of this adorable dog. We have since taken Charlie in to our home. He has continued to trim down to a more normal weight. Charlie has shown no behavior issues at anytime. He is a loving member of our household in addition to our 2 boys and 2 cats. Without Angel's Rest I don't know what might have happened to Charlie.

My wife and I met Fred when we were volunteering at ARAS and fell in love with him. It didn't matter to us that he had kidney disease, we loved him and wanted to take him home. At the time we had 2 dogs and another cat which didn't take to him at first. After some time they warmed up to him and saw how sweet and wonderful he was. We found out after bringing him home he was quite playful for such a laid back cat, and loved to play with any cord or string he could find. He would also furiously kneed on us, he was a very strong cat for his size. Our time with Fred was short, after having him almost a year we found he had passed in his sleep. He never showed any signs of pain or anguish. We miss him very much but are thankful for the memories and time that we have because of ARAS. Thank you Angels Rest Animal Sanctuary for being the best animal hospice ever.

I met Perla several years before she and Mike started Angel's Rest and can honestly say no one cares more about the welfare of homeless animals than they do. Doing what they do - bringing in older dogs and cats who often are sick or have been abused - is not the easy way. But their passion for helping the animals that no one wants is pure and heartfelt. They do it because they truly care and want to make a difference. Angel's Rest is unique among the country's rescue facilities. They say it takes a village to make a passion project work. Nowhere is that more evident than at Angel's Rest!

We brought Zoey, a senior bow-legged shepherd mix, into our home in 2015. She was so smart and adored everyone she met. Her favorite things to do were to go "byes" in the car, balance a treat on her nose & catch it, and snuggle on the couch with us. Sadly, we lost her suddenly to hemangiosarcoma in August. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think about her.

Zoey embodied the type of animals that Angel's Rest takes in: seniors which no one wants due to advanced age and/or medical conditions. They are a great organization that everyone should support!

Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary captured my heart after learning that they take in animals that would be euthanized due to advanced age, critical conditions, disabilities or bite histories. Because of their dedication to the "underdog", I decided to become a volunteer and subsequently accepted a position on the board of directors.

There is nothing about running a hospice facility for animals that is easy. It is very costly due to the exorbitant medical bills, your heart is broken frequently because some of the animals do not have a chance to enjoy a full life, and it is labor intensive as many animals receive specialized or critical care . Still, there is no place I would rather be than Angel's Rest.

I have adopted some wonderful animals from Angel's Rest, such as George who was brought here from Georgia after he was diagnosed with a liver shunt and his prognosis was very poor -- two months, at best. About one and one half years later, George is thriving as a young puppy should. Yes, he requires a special diet and specialized attention, but he is doing amazingly well. This is what Angel's Rest is all about and I am proud to be part of this wonderful organization.

I am one of those people who cannot watch the ASPCA commercials without bawling my eyes out so several years ago, when I knew there was an animal sanctuary in my hometown, I thought I wouldn't even be able to lay eyes on these dogs without crying. However, no matter how sad the story of the dog arriving at Angel's Rest, I have seen firsthand NUMEROUS times the AMAZING transformation of these animals once they've been rescued by Perla (the founder of ARAS). A dog, Clyde, upon arrival was unable to walk stairs and could barely get up and down to even walk due to arthritis. Fast forward 2 weeks and he was running down the hill to the pond with Perla's other rescues. It warmed my heart and was just one of many I've witnessed a miracle with. Although it's been a long time since I've volunteered, I still continue to do an automatic monthly donation through Paypal because this is an absolutely WORTHY cause. Kudos to Perla and her team!

I have had the privilege of volunteering with Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary so I can write this review with a little more insight then some and I can tell you that Perla and her crew work tirelessly to save, rehabilitate and rehome as many animals as they possibly can.
Their dedication to the well-being of all animals and their support of foster and permanent pet-parents is beyond compare. Perla has dedicated her life to this cause and has not only been an educator in regards to the value of animal life and care but she has been a tireless advocator for changes in law such as the anti-tethering law which was passed in New Richmond, Ohio.
Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary is a legitimate and valuable addition to Clermont County, Ohio but its influence is felt far beyond the physical boundaries of just that county or the state.

Perla and her "Angels" at ARAS stepped up to help save the lives of several cats when their owner was mauled to death by 2 dogs in Dayton, Ohio. As one of the volunteers I called to help place over 30 cats. When I contacted Perla she took some and then when it came to the last 7 the Animal Resource Center in Dayton didn't want and threatened euthanasia once again Perla stepped forward and took the last few cats from us. While we dropped off the cats we got to visit with her "dog town" and she invited us to visit the "cat house in the trees". How inspiring and beautiful. We were able to visit some of the first group of cats and they had settled in very well. I cannot say enough good things about Perla and her rescue. She really steps up and her heart is so big for the unwanted and helpless. If you are looking for a place to donate time or money to, this is a great cause. Also, don't forget they do adoptions too! I am the practice manager at Eastgate Animal Hospital and we have been the primary veterinarians for Angels Rest Animal Sanctuary for many years. I've personally worked with Perla and her amazing volunteers for the past 2-3 years. They all genuinely love and put everything they have in helping dogs and cats in need. They are unique because they take on the pets who many others would not or would have put down a long time ago. They provide hospice for those pets and do everything they can to keep them comfortable. They have taken in dogs in absolute horrible condition where one needed both ACL's done, one needed a bilateral enucleation due to cataracts, etc etc.. Everything that needed to be done was done without haste. Perla has been so dedicated to providing care and love to these animals that has 100% become her life. She strives daily to provide for them and do whatever is necessary to put them first. Angels Rest Animal Sanctuary is a truly unique rescue. They are one of the best non profit rescues I've been lucky to work with.

I moved into the Clermont County Ohio area about 4 years ago with my wife and 2 sons. We had previously fostered dogs where we use to live and wanted to continue doing so. My wife spent countless hours online trying to find a no kill shelter that would foster dogs. She came across Angels Rest Animal Sanctuary not far from our home. She contacted them and started the process. The last "rescue" we worked with were quick to drop off dogs with very few questions. Not Angels Rest! They wanted to make sure the animals best interest was served and not just "housed". We met with dogs with our kids and had a home visit. We were very impressed with the way things were handled by the folks there.

Our first forever foster was a large mixed breed senior named Emmitt. He was the most amazing dog of all time. He made a quick lasting impression with the entire family. Emmitt stayed with us for a year and a half. Every day that we spent with Emmitt was pure joy. He was my youngest sons best friend and that 1 dog of a lifetime. The 4 of us will carry Emmitt with us the rest of our days. His smiling face, his happy go lucky attitude and his 140lb lapdog love...

We have continued to foster over the last few years. We currently have 3 forever fosters in our home, all seniors. They are so happy when I wake up in the morning and even happier when I get home at night. Sure they all have their own quirks, what dog doesn't, but they're family to us. We have been so moved by the Angels Rest folks, mission, and founder, that my wife inquired about volunteering there. And that's exactly what she has done for the last 2 years. The people who work at Angels Rest don't do it for the money, recognition, or fame. It's about the animals! Day in and day out is for the "furry kids".

Angels Rest doesn't just take in every day dogs and cats. They take in the unwanted and abused. They seek out the sick and the abused, the problem animals. They are doing hospice care for these animals when people no longer will take care of "their" pets. I've personally seen dogs that aggressive towards men sit in my lap! That's the kind of help that these folks are doing for the animals. I'm proud to have my family associated with Angels Rest Animal Sanctuary, to me there is no better......

Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary is a one-of-a-kind organization. They take in the animals that no one wants--whether they have physical issues like an old, cancer-riddled dog or one with behavioral issues because they have been abused. They work with all sorts of cases but mostly specialize in hospice. We fostered the most incredible dog, Emmitt, a large senior rottweiler mix. Two years after we brought him into our home, he developed cancer. In his last days, Angel's Rest was there to support us through it all. They are a wonderful organization and do amazing work.

I have been following Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary for some time now and am very impressed with the way they treat the animals they rescue and how they get their funding. I will say that I fell in love with Lew and all of his antics! It' can't be easy being a non-profit and being called upon when shelters have animals that need a little extra care. I appreciate that they "specialize" in large breed dogs that often times are dumped - either at a shelter or just abandoned. They take in older animals, sick animals, animals that would most like be in danger and allow them to live out their lives knowing what it's like to be cared for and loved - no matter what the reason they would have met that danger. They provide comfort, medication, food and best of all - love for the animals remaining time on earth. While I am unable at this time to foster or adopt from them - I know that I can still help by donating. I have made several trips to the Thrift Store and Boutique to drop off items that I know would be of value to someone. I have shopped at the store as well - you just never know what you'll find. Thank you to Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary for all you do!

We are a relatively young organization and run our operation on private property that is not open or accessible to the general public without an appointment. We have never had anyone with the name Ryan James or any combination or version of that name visit our facility. Further, we have never had any volunteers, contractors, adopters, fosters, or anyone associated with our organization bearing any version of that name. We are not sure who wrote the post attributed to Ryan James or why, but we welcome members of the general public or anyone else to contact us to make an appointment to tour our entire facility and interact with all of our animal residents, as they love company.

We are fostering a beautiful dog for Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary named Moses. They are a wonderful organization who always think of the animals well being first. We picked Moses up from the sanctuary itself and it is a lovely place for these wonderful animals to live in. Moses came to us happy and healthy and is a great dog. We are actually not going to be fostering him for much longer because he has become a member of our family and we are going to adopt him permanently.

We can't recommend ARAS enough and are grateful for the wonderful work they do for these deserving animals.

This is not a sanctuary! Animals with chronic conditions are left untreated. All of the animals have diarrhea. The dogs are kept crated or confined to small rooms 22 hours out of 24.

Angel's Rest Animal Sanctuary is truly dedicated to providing a safe and comforting environment for animals that people have just thrown away. The team here rescues animals that are special needs from high kill shelters and gives them a second chance. This organization is truly an animal's advocate and will do anything they can to help medically challenged animals have the life that they too deserve. I have been fortunate enough to have the privilege of fostering a dog that they rescued from a high kill shelter, Pelusa. Pelusa has turned into the sweetest, most lovable dog. If not for Angel's Rest, Pelusa would no longer be with us and she would have never known what it was liked to be loved and treated the way animals should be. She and Angel's Rest have truly touched my heart. The compassion Perla, the founder of Angel's Rest, has for these animals is second to none. She is working miracles for these animals everyday. In meeting Perla, you figure out very quickly that her mission for Angel's Rest is a way of life for her. I have never seen someone so dedicated to helping animals and helping people by matching them up in forever homes. Perla takes on big challenges by rescuing animals that people tossed aside because of mounting vet bills. No matter how big the obstacle, Perla does what she needs to make sure these poor babies get the medical attention they so desperately need and then follows up with a safe haven for them to recover and sometimes live out the rest of their life, no matter how short or long the time frame may be. It warms my heart knowing that these animals all know what it is like to be loved and cherished as they heal or wait to pass the Rainbow Bridge. Perla truly is the Angel and I am proud to support the organization in any way possible.
