Mission: As one of thirteen of Maryland's state-certified heritage areas, ATHA, Inc. has an honored mandate to award funds to partners across the county for projects and programs that promote history, art, culture, and nature. The organization does this through reviewing and accepting grant requests to the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) major grant program ($100,000 and less) and through our Rocket Grant program ($5,000 and less). Each year, ATHA awards $25,000 in Rocket Grants and helps direct approximately $500,000 per year through MHAA grants into the Heritage Area.
Results: Based on a 2020 report, the economic impact of Anacostia Trails Heritage Area is $36.1 million annually. This economic impact consists of tourism driven by the presence of the organization ($35.4 million) and the operations and grantmaking activities of the heritage area in collaboration with the Maryland Heritage Area Authority. Job data from that same report calculates the total employment impact of the Anacostia Trails Heritage area at 565 jobs. This employment impact consists of jobs supported and sustained by the organization's operations and grantmaking activities (7 jobs) and tourism (558 jobs). Additionally, the total state and local taxes generated as a result of Anacostia Trails' s operations, grantmaking, and tourism totals $5.3 million.
