Mission: To help all, but especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people though hostelling.
Programs: Cultural Kitchens in the Schools is an evocative, content standards based curriculum spanning over the course of 5 sessions, with an optional culminating overnight field trip to the Seattle hostel. Students learn the power of cultural awareness, research skills, and community as they work together to create a group presentation on a country of their choice, exploring both their own cultural and an entirely new culture along the way. The program culminates in an opportunity for the students to cook a traditional meal from their research country, which they share with their peers and international travel volunteers. After the meal, the students are able to present their research in a creative manner of their choice to an avid audience of international volunteers and travelers at the Seattle hostel.
Cultural Kitchens in the Schools was first developed by Hostelling International Chicago and has been running in the Chicago Public School District since 2000. Since its inception the program has spread across the country, and now reaches thousands of students each year. In Washington State we run the program in Seattle's Public School District as well as youth groups such as local Girl Scout troops.
