Mission: The american university in cairo (auc) is a premier english-language institution of higher learning. The university is committed to teaching and research of the highest caliber, and offers exceptional liberal arts and professional education in a cross-cultural environment. Auc builds a culture of leadership, lifelong learning, continuing education and service among its graduates, and is dedicated to making significant contributions to egypt and the international community in diverse fields. Chartered and accredited in the united states and egypt, it is an independent, not-for-profit, equal-opportunity institution. Programs: Academic degree programs to the ma, msc, and phd levels: the official academic enrollment figures for fy 2017 are taken on the first day of the fall semester. The total academic enrollment was 6,659 with 5,494 undergraduate students, 1,021 master's degree students, 44 phd students. During fy 2017, 1,163 students completed undergraduate degree programs, 10 completed doctorate degrees, 320 completed master's degree programs, and 3 completed graduate diplomas.
adult and continuing education programs: during fy 2017, programs in the school of continuing education enrolled a total of 24,186 students. The school of business executive education (formerly the management center and the international executive education institute) enrolled a total of 4,000 students. The engineering services program enrolled a total of 6,000 students.
research and other sponsored activity programs: the office of sponsored programs reports that auc received grants and awards in the aggregate amount of $ 8,430,428 from outside sponsors during fy 2017 in support of research, training and public service projects. This includes 78 sponsored projects averaging over $108,082 per project. In addition to the many and varied faculty research projects, the university conducts research projects through a number of 10 research centers.
