Mission: Founded in 2008, the mission of the all-star orchestra ( the organization) is to make accessible, for free, the joy and understanding of classical music to the widest possible audience through public television and the world's largest educational website: the khan academy. To achieve this the organization produces, films, and records classical and contemporary orchestral masterpieces in a concert hall, with the resulting programs to be broadcast over local, national and interactive public media. The programs include a strong educational component and are inspiring new directions for music education ( 5 million music students reached via khan academy), entertainment, and high-level artistic exposure for a broad and diverse audience. Season one was recorded in 2012, season two in 2014, and season 3 in 2016. National broadcasts and rebroadcasts via american public television have been continuous since september 2013. Programs: The mission of the all-star orchestra (aso) is to provide free access to outstanding classical music performances and education reaching the widest possible audience. Aso's programs are distributed nationwide via american public television and the world's largest educational website: the khan academy. Expenses are primarily related to producing and creating content, a fact that is more evident in the aso's audited financial statements than in the 990-reporting format. For example, the $290,236 "functional expenses" figure (part ix, line 25) above does not fully include aso's program investments that are partially listed under "intangible assets" (see part x, line 14).
aso public television accomplishments national broadcasts of three seasons - sixteen programs-on public television since 2013, winning six emmy awards and the ascap broadcasting excellence award. Season four: "all-star band masterpieces"-recorded in 2017 in partnership with the united states marine band-will be broadcast in 2018.
aso online education accomplishments created a unique music education website in 2014 in partnership with the khan academy that in 2017 is reaching over 6 million students worldwide. Original content produced by aso includes: basics of music, instruments of the orchestra, masterpieces in performance, work analyses, etc. Featured in musical america as an "innovator for 2016. " future plans include continual growth of music educational content, with a goal to reach 10 million students in the next year.
