Mission: Preventing and treating hiv through direct services, advocacy, education, and awareness. Aid upstate became a direct medical provider, expanded care, support, and prevention services in 2017.
Programs: Aid upstate directly assisted 1275 individuals living with hiv access a range of services including enrollment and payment for health insurance, medical care, access to prescriptions, referrals and payment for oral health care, food pantry, transportation to appts. , mental health support groups, addictions counseling and treatment, assistance with housing, hiv treatment and prevention education. All individuals living with hiv received medical case mgmt services, assessing short- and long-term needs and available resources. Hiv prevention services were expanded to include provision of prep (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a prescription medicine that is closely monitored through laboratory tests that can help reduce the risk of getting hiv-1 through sex, when taken every day and used together with safer sex practices.
housing services included ongoing assessment of housing stability and needs of individuals living with hiv through medical and housing case management. Assistance with payments for rent, utilities and mortgages was provided to 183 households to prevent homelessness. Housing placement was provided to 742 households in unstable conditions through providing assistance with rental and utility deposit payments. Rental subsidy was provided to 13 households through the tenant based rental program. Operational support was provided for 11 bedroom group home operated by aid upstate; and contact for operational support for stephen's house, a 5 bedroom group facility.
aid upstate's prevention department provides hiv and other sexually transmitted infection (sti) testing. Individuals testing positive are linked to medical care through referral to medical team or external providers for treatment. All individuals, positive or negative for stis are counseled in risk reduction education. The prevention department provides phlebotomy services for prevention and medical laboratory services and screening/counseling for prep. Testing services were provided in 2017. Capacity building and training is provided across the state to other providers.
