Mission: Our academy was founded in 1966 and currently has active affiliations with 70 of the approximately 150 academic and community training centers that train pathology residents in clinical pathology. From its origin, it has followed the mission statement of being dedicated to the advancement of teaching and scholarship in laboratory medicine. We follow the objectives of the academy. Since its inception, this dedication has been driven by the following objectives: 1. To encourage and advance the highest standards of education in laboratory medicine in medical school and related curricula. 2. To encourage and promote the highest standards of resident training and post-graduate education of physicians and scientists in clinical pathology at universities and medical schools. 3. To encourage and promote the highest standards of service, education and research in academic laboratory medicine.
Programs: See schedule o during the year that ended september 30, 2017, the academy provided services to approximately 296 active members and 153 associate members. 256 individuals attended the 2017 aclps annual meeting ("lab medicine") hosted by yale university in new haven, ct. The annual meeting is held to disseminate and share scientific and medical information that helps to advance the academy's cause. The web-based ex ordo online system was used again this year for online abstract submissions. Young investigator award funds were used to pay meeting registration fees for 32 attendees (29 yia winners and three 2016 yi grant program winners who presented at the meeting). The academy also continued the paul e. Strandjord young investigator grant program this year and provided three 10,000 research grants to program awardees in 2017. Grant submissions in future cycles will be managed through an online system to facilitate program administration. An aclps co-sponsored educational session was held on september 6th, 2017 at the american society for clinical pathology (ascp) annual meeting in chicago, il. The aclps-led series of case-based review articles in the american journal of clinical pathology also continued this year, and has been re-branded "aclps critical reviews" to increase recognition in google searches. Aclps has continued efforts related to: 1) website and software improvements, 2) the choosing wisely campaign, 3) collaboration with other societies, and 4) enhancing membership. Aclps continues to work with ascp to formalize a new memorandum of understanding related to ongoing organizational activities.
