Mission: ABACA (Arts Benefit All Coalition Alternative) was created in 1992 as a collaborative project among five 501(c)3 arts organizations and Satellite Academy, an alternative public high school on Manhattan's Lower East Side for students who have not succeeded in traditional high school settings. For over nine years, ABACA has brought arts education to Satellite Academy, which is most comprised of students (60% Latino, 28% African American and 2% other) who come from low-income communities in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. ABACA provides youth with experiences of success through visual and performing arts learning and training to enhance student achievement, broaden student horizons and build self-esteem. Our process provides opportunities for students to learn about the arts, forums in which they can cultivate their own artistic talents, activities to enrich their participation in the general curriculum at Satellite Academy, and training that enables them to acquire skills that will aid them during and after high school. Here are a few student reflections of their experiences with ABACA:"It made me a better thinker, a better observer...and a much better speaker in public.""When I first took the class, I was doing the average amount of work.... Why did I set myself up to be average? I didn't know I could do better. Now I know I can."
