Programs: Preschoolour preschoolers grew immeasurably during this past school year. We continue to refine our curriculum to meet the unique needs our students have, emotionally, academically, spiritually, physically and socially. Our teachers have been able to observe and learn from several of the leading early education centers in new york city. We have also had the privilege of learning from a consultant that specializes in emotionally responsive practice. A majority of our students face some type of extremely traumatic one time or ongoing situation before the age of three. If these traumas arent worked through, science shows that our students wont have the capacity to learn and develop at their highest capacity. The training we have received has equipped us to support our students emotionally in the classroom which will have significant effects on their learning and development not only now but as they grow as well.
afterschoolthis year was a productive one. Our children learned about the importance of having a voice in the community and take part in demonstrations about subjects that matter to them. For example, our february theme at after school was black history month. Staff gave lessons about african dance, african folk tales, and talked about important black men and women that had an impact for positive change in our world. Passion classes started again in january with options of art, hip-hop dance, or the history and writing of rap. Our highlight event thus far was our black lives matter march around our neighborhood. We practiced chants and made posters where our students used their creative abilities to illustrate their feelings about their lives mattering with words or pictures. Our 3rd-5th grade girls also took a field trip to see hidden figures, a movie about african-american women who served a vital role in nasa during the early years of the us space program
babies to threeour babies to three program seeks to empower and equip families to take ownership of their childs growth through singing, playing, reading, and learning together. Our program allows us to meet many social, emotional and educational needs of the babies, as well as partner with the parents during this critical time in their childs development. Babies-3 grew exponentially, averaging 30-40 adults and children each week and serving a total of 100 different people this year! Caregivers were able to interact with their children in a social setting, feeling the support from other parents while watching their children learn to share and make friends, many for the first time. We were able to serve breakfast and lunch to our families this year. We all know how sitting around a table eating a meal together can create a relaxed, intimate environment.
summer campduring camp, children in the our neighborhood have five weeks of learning, enrichment, creative thinking and healthy eating. They get to explore new places, serve each other, and learn in a safe and positive environment. Camp is our transition program in our seamless series - it helps transition our students from one grade to the next, one season to the next, or one program to the next (our 4y/o prek class can enroll in camp the summer before entering kindergarten! )
