This organization understands local journalism and should be the gold standard for all other local journalism institutions. Their model is refreshing and more news produced like this is sorely needed.
I have advised Global Press for many years and am proud to support their multifaceted approach to closing critical gaps in international news reporting. Their work across the Global Press Journal, the Global Press Institute, and Global Press News Services is comprehensive and essential, making sure that the world has the stories, journalists, and standards necessary to understand itself more completely.
GP provides fascinating insight into parts of the world I know little about. The focus is always on reflecting the lived experience of local community members with depth and precision.
Previous Stories
Global Press is transforming journalism for good. It trains and employs local reporters to produce investigative journalism in some of the world's most challenging places. Beyond the stereotypical stories about war and disaster often produced by foreign correspondents, GP's community-based journalists offer coverage on a wide range of topics. And they earn a professional wage while doing so. The ground-breaking Global Press Duty of Care training program helps keep journalists safe in a world where telling the truth is increasingly under attack.
Global Press has trained over 200 local women reporters around the world. I have followed the work of Global Press for several years and have always been impressed with how the organization has redefined international journalism. So much so, that I featured the organization in a report I published with the University of Michigan titled, "The Bottom-Up Media Revolution: How Social Entrepreneurs are Building Trust Between Communities and the Media." After many years of admiring the ideas and work of Global Press, I joined the organization as COO in 2019. Today, the organization continues to expand its reach and scale in a meaningful and values driven way.
I joined the Board of Global Press because I could not be more moved by the mission and the creative approach this incredible team is taking to accomplish it. I learn something every time I read a story from one of these skilled, trained reporters -- they are providing important coverage of communities too often overlooked by other news sources, and doing so in ethical, thoughtful, transparent ways that are a model for the rest of the industry.
As a donor, I am increasingly impressed with Global Press Institute's work and the way they are building a cadre of trained journalists to cover under reported parts of the world. Their 'duty of care' for their journalists has been rated as the best in the industry. And the stories that are produced, with first-rate editorial processes around them, highlight local and regional events and issues across the spectrum of issues - poverty, education, refugees and migration, environment, and on and on. Their journalists get at what is really happening in their own geographies and cultures in a way that no outside reporter could possible cover.
Global Press Institute is incredibly impressive, efficient and important. We all benefit from GPI's wide reaching and professional journalism training and employment of locals to report the news - on the ground, ethical, more nuanced - in the least covered areas of the world. GPI is committed to a strong culture of excellence, transparency and dignity and was just nominated to Inc's. Best Places to Work 2019. And they are a leader in terms of "duty of care" (safety) for journalists who live in the area where traditional methods of extraction may not always an option. Bravo Global Press Institute- thank you for all you do.
As a foundation executive, I was a donor for several yers becoming a Board member. In my 10+ years in philanthropy, I have found that Global Press Institute (Global Press) is one of the most innovate and impactful organizations that our foundation has ever supported.
In addition to their model that trains local female journalists to produce high quality news, unlike most news today, theirs is fair, balanced - and therefore makes a difference. As a result of Global Press reporting, laws have changed, Constitutions have been amended, and corrupt officials charged and tried. I like to think of Global Press as 'news as it should be.'
This is an A+ organization that is changing the landscape for journalism in every country they enter as they continue to expand across the globe. They not only bring a vital source of information to places where it's critically needed, but also serve to empower women and provide employment opportunities that would otherwise not be available. Their comprehensive training program builds skills that last a lifetime, and duty of care system ensures that their employees feel safe despite operating in locations where the press is not fully embraced and political system is oftentimes unstable.
Cristi and her team continue to impress with relentless energy, and I'm looking forward to continuing to see what they can accomplish as they continue to grow and expand their mission.
I am a visuals editor here, and I know firsthand that Global Press has some of the most amazing people as reporters. Every day, I see stunning photos of local news and daily life from their communities around the globe. The local aspect of their reporting is really important and missing from a lot of journalism today, which makes their images even more meaningful and relevant. Plus they are always a pleasure to look at!
Every day, people around the world are looking for sources of verifiable information. In the constant stream that is the 24-hour news cycle, it's becoming harder and harder to decide who to trust. Global Press is making that a little easier. By employing women journalists to report on their own communities, Global Press is changing the way people view some of the world's least covered places. By sending every story published on GPJ through a rigorous fact checking and copy editing process, Global Press is guaranteeing that the information distributed is ethically sourced, verified and factual.
I'm an editor with this organization. Every day is challenging and fulfilling, and Global Press ensures that each employee has everything necessary to do this groundbreaking work. I engage with journalists from around the world each day to discuss how their stories impact their communities as well as the rest of the globe. This work isn't easy, but we have incredible support in everything we do.
I'm fortunate enough to regularly see the staff of Global Press hard at work. Each news desk, whether in Kashmir, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala or Sri Lanka, is staffed with motivated and professional journalists who challenge themselves to think beyond what local newspapers are reporting on -- to explore the unasked questions and get to the heart of the matter. Their critical thinking and shoe-leather reporting is buttressed by the staff in D.C. who ensure that readers have something new to read from across the globe every day.
It's great receiving local perspectives from reporters in countries hardly covered in international media. The stories they report on are unique, human, and refreshingly nuanced, especially when juxtaposed with the click-baity, disaster-oriented reporting that oversaturates mainstream news today.
As a regular reader of Global Press Journal, I find my worldview regularly transformed by their stories. I never understood the value of local reporting, or the dangers of foreign correspondence. The stories on Global Press Journal are always compelling and always leave me with a better understanding about people around the world who are often minimized to become either victims or survivors by other news agencies. I am in awe of GPJ's ability to recreate their model in such diverse parts of the world. I can't imagine my weekly news routine without GPJ.
I support Global Press because it is changing the way international journalism is done. By training and employing local women journalists to report from some of the least-covered places on Earth, Global Press gives me a deeper understanding of the world. As a former foreign correspondent myself, I'm we'll aware of what normally happens. Westerners like me are parachuted in to cover the latest war or natural disaster in some far away place. We document tragedy and then we move on to the next horrific scene. That's often the only story that is written about these countries, so it leaves a false impression that there is nothing there but war, disease and disaster. Global Press changes the storytellers, and therefore the stories. By training talented, ethical reporters to cover communities that they know well, Global Press delivers stories that go deeper. I learn something from every story, which is why I read them every day.
Global Press is redefining foreign correspondence, while making significant investments in the field of journalism. Who better to tell stories of remote corners of the world than professionally trained reporters, earning a living wage, who live there. Global Press reporters cover all aspects of peoples lives, not just war, disaster and disease. One way to combat fake news is to invest in REAL news, ethically and responsibly sourced. On top of all this, Global Press reporters are all women simply because there aren't enough women's voices in journalism worldwide.
GPI is a dream organization for any donor. There leadership is thoughtful, strategic and savvy. They have a sound and diversified fundraising stream, in addition to their revenue generating news syndication. Not to a mention an excellent and top notch product!
But best of all, they are pioneering a new model of international journalism, which is empowering women and building communities through skills training.
This is why my family foundation and I will be a supporter of GPI for many years to come! Kudos GPI!
Cristi Hegranes was selected as a 2012 winner of the Grinnell College Young Innovator for Social Justice Prize ("Grinnell Prize") for her work with Global Press Institute, advancing women's empowerment and quality journalism. Grinnell has seen the impact that Cristi's journalism training-to-employment model has had in the world, and values GPI's continuing efforts to create large-scale change for women through journalism. The women of GPI tell incredible stories, real-world narratives from their communities, and Grinnell proudly continues its relationship with Cristi Hegranes and the women of GPI.

I joined the GPI board this year and have been continually amazed by the incredible impact GPI is able to achieve. The organization is changing the way news is developed and disseminated while also changing women's lives -- and the lives of their families and communities. Cristi's leadership and dedication is incredible and I'm proud to be part of this organization.
GPI is dedicated to creating systemic change, first by educating, employing, and empowering women to report on real news and real stories in their communities. This content not only has impact locally, but has gone on to create national and international change as underreported stories in underrepresented countries become well known and discussed in an open platform.

I am a proud supporter of the Press Institute - this organization is an award winning, high impact leader that is creating global change.

I was first introduced to this incredible organization at the launch of their mentorship program in early 2010. When founder Cristi Hegranes shared the personal stories of some of the woman whose lives have been forever changed through their journalism training program I was genuinely touched. As I learned more, the social entrepreneur in me quickly realized the potential impact that a journalism training-to-employment model can have in the world. These women are making big things happen in new ways – mastering the art of positive courage and giving voice to otherwise unheard populations while providing an income for their families and creating a ripple of positive impact that can be felt throughout an entire community, undoubtedly for many generations. Wow!
