This group of tireless volunteers works endlessly to protect threatened natural areas on Staten Island and throughout the city and the harbor. And, continues to identify new areas at risk.

They have an institutional memory that goes back decades and are respected by elected officials and community leaders alike. The NRPA aligns itself with like minded organizations and mentors new environmentalists as well as recruit young people to be the conservation leaders of tomorrow.

This organization started more than 40 years ago and has only gotten better over time. The NRPA’s advocacy for our oceans and tidal wetlands has expanded to working with other organizations, schools and education for the community. Type ‘Staten Island Student Summit’ onto your browser and see a four minute video of the crew in action.

The assistant director of NYC Parks recently described the NRPA as “the most consistent and engaged volunteer group” he has seen while working for Parks.

Go to www.NRPA.com and find out about them.

Natural Resources Protective Association ( NRPA) works to keep the beaches of Staten Island and Brooklyn clean by reducing plastics and doing cleanups. In the last year, NRPA and friends removed over 2000 lbs of garbage, improving our marine environment. NRPA keeps it fun and educational.

I have worked with this group many times and they are always providing a dedicated means of communicating environmental factors for the people of Staten Island. NRPA tirelessly organizes and provides materials to clean up shorelines and alleviate negative effects of anthropogenic behaviors. This group is vital to the continuance of natural areas for this area that is under siege by overdevelopment and little regulation or environmental enforcement. It is a great pleasure to work with any of the wonderful people in this group. I greatly appreciate all the effort they provide in conservation and protection of our remaining natural resources.

The NRPA of Staten Island are dedicated people that work endlessly to care for the remaining natural areas on Staten Island. These are people that stand up for land preservation, conservation values, and quality practices. They consistently engage in shoreline cleanup to keep beaches and marshes cleaner and healthier. They attend public meetings, fight against big money unnecessary development, connect communities and people to nature, help educate others, and are integral to keeping Staten Island healthy. These folks engage government officials to create a voice for the remaining nature found on Staten Island and to stand up against cheapskate practices and poor management techniques. The lives of so many people are better because of this group, and most people, due to their own ignorance, will never even know how much work these folks do to make things better. They are certainly worthy of the highest praise possible and I am very grateful for this groups existence.

I am proud to say that I have volunteered with NRPA since the late 1990's. The organization was founded in 1977 by the late Lou Figurelli, and his determination and tenacity guides us till this day. Over the decades, we have worked with groups all over the NY metro area to protect and preserve shoreline and marine habitat, natural areas and related issues. We've reviewed thousands of pages of documents and written hundreds of pages of formal comment letters. And we do all of this without salaries or other compensation.

I have known and worked professionally with this organization since 1999. When it comes to environmental protection and a solid conservation ethic, NPRA is it. Many members are anglers & boaters AND are dedicated stewards of the waters that surround Staten island and the thousands of acres of wildlife habitats the exist within the Borough. Their outreach to the general public is multifaceted and NRPA's commitment to clean water is uncompromising.

NY/NJ Baykeeper has had the great pleasure of working with talented, engaged and
energetic group of individuals at the Natural Resources Protective Association of Staten Island for over 25 years. Jimmy Scarcella, Richie Chan, Ida, Sanoff and the whole team there have been diligently on the job of protecting the water, land wildlife throughout that time.

They are always at important public meetings, at times they are the only ones there, representing the local natural and human communities. They are also excellent about communicating the information, outcomes and concerns stemming from these meetings.

They are smart, tough, experienced environmental policy reviewers who have been around the block a few times and know the wheat from the shaft when discussing issues with elected officials, government agency reps and consultants. Not only are they extraordinary for small voluntary organization, they outshine most larger professional NGOs.

We rely on them for knowledgeable input about local and a host of issues, including dredging, fishing, water quality and always learn more and have a clearer picture after communication with our friends at NRPA.

NRPA is the epitome of what local environmental and community groups should strive to be - strong, friendly, knowledgeable and always on the case.

Sincerely,

Greg Remaud

This is an great group of folks that are enthusiastic about protecting our waterways, and they've been doing it for decades. They fought the Army Corps of Engineers when they were trying to dump toxic sludge into our waterways. They organize well-attended local beach cleanups very often. And they are a great source of information about our local marine life.

This organization does an incredible amount for the borough of Staten Island and shorelines as a whole. They spend several weekends throughout the year conducting beach cleanups, removing hundreds of pounds of trash. They also partner with several organizations to raise awareness of the importance of keeping our environment pristine.

These guys do so much to keep our shorelines clean. The sea never stops washing trash in, and they never stop taking it away. Full disclosure: I am a member that gets out with them occasionally, but it's always a great feeling to leave a beach a little cleaner than it was when I arrived. How they do so much with so little resources - clean-up, outreach, education - is just incredible.

NYC H2O often partners with NRPA to organize beach cleanups at Lemon Creek and Conference House Park in Staten Island. They are wonderful partners and help recruit local volunteers and provide engaging insight about the ecology and history of the sites that we work at.

I have volunteered with NRPA for a few cleanup events and have gotten to know a few members over time. I've come to know them as enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who aim to improve the health and integrity of Staten Island's natural environment and community. NRPA invites people of all ages to join their cleanups in a great effort to clean up Staten Island's coast before more waste enters our marine ecosystem. They have also graciously helped me with a couple of school projects based on plastic pollution so far and have always been willing to share their knowledge on the issue. Their current work and advocacy for the environment are vital to moving Staten Island toward a cleaner future.

I am honored to have had many opportunities to volunteer with this great group. For over forty years NRPA has been working to protect our marine environment. Whether out on our beaches and surrounding lands making our waterfront environment cleaner, safer and more beautiful, or working as well-informed environmental advocates, they are always on the job. Thank you, NRPA!

NRPA is outstanding in its work to protect the marine environment of Staten Island, NY. For decades, barely a weekend goes by when NRPA volunteers are not working, either on their own or in partnership with other organizations, to make our waterfront cleaner, safer and more beautiful. And when they are not rolling up their sleeves and doing the physical work of cleanups, they are doing the work of becoming informed on matters of importance and advocating for the environment. Our thanks to this great organization for all they do!

They continue to fight for the rights of the people of the world to have clean water, clean beaches, protection from storms, and other natural disasters. They work to keep people informed about issues concerning the natural areas. They have monthly beach cleanups to remove hundreds of pounds of trash. They work to encourage people to come out to help..

This is an outstanding organization . It was formed forty years ago in response to an attempt by the US Army Corps of Engineers to dump toxic dredged mud into the waters of NY Harbor. They have been unable to proceed with these efforts in spite of multiple attempts.

Expanding their vision, the group monitors thoughtless development of waterfront areas, performs shorefront clean-ups and advocates for the oceans and all the critters who depend on it; including us.

Educational initiatives allow the NRPA to develop the next generation of stewards for the planet.

This is a great organization. It was formed 40 years ago stop the US Army Corps of Engineers from allowing toxic dredged mud to be dumped into NY Harbor. It hasn’t happened yet and never will if the NRPA is on the case.

The group has expanded its efforts to monitor for thoughtless shorefront development, pollution and dumping. Shorefront Clean-ups and education programs provide an opportunity to develop the next generation of stewards for the planet
